Schottkey 7th path - anyone know how AFX created the opening hats/cymbal sound?

Anyone have any ideas?

I know he was using roland r8 with "dance" card....but its a weird sound i've never heard before.

Sounds like cymbals, maybe 808 ride.....but also like a guiro? 

i'm stumped

i always assumed that was a sample

but i have zero evidence to support that assumption or any clue as to where it could've come from

Sounds like a sample of paper being swiped along with whatever gnarly cymbal samp that is... reminds me of some drum machine ones I've downloaded but never used. 

tldr I don't know.
