Darkness of Otherwhere is written and directed by award winning, visionary Ayoub Qanir. A dark noir Japanese language feature film, shot on location in Tokyo with a nod to classic Japanese arthouse films of the 1960s. Ayoub approached Si Begg with the aim of making a unique, contemporary, organic score which referenced a Japanese aesthetic without veering into pastiche. To create this Si constructed and recorded an array of bespoke instruments, from feedbacking wires and bowed sheets of steel to deconstructed acoustic guitars turned into new stringed instruments. The result recalls the drones of sound baths and deep mediation, combined with the tension of scores such as Mica Levi’s Under The Skin.
