  Quote

Pioneering electronic artist Four Tet has reached a settlement in the legal battle against his former record label.

The musician, whose real name is Kieran Hebden, sued Domino Records last year over the royalties he gets paid when his music is downloaded or streamed.

He argued that the 13.5% royalty rate he was being offered was unfair, and demanded a 50% split with the label.

In a settlement, Domino agreed to the honour the 50% rate and reimbursed the musician for historic underpayments.

It was quite a reversal for the indie label, which originally responded to the case by removing several Four Tet albums from streaming services (they were later reinstated).

he got something like 56,000 pounds for 5 years of streaming. man.. streaming doesn't pay even if you're well known and successful like him. so, £11,000 or so a year. w/o gigging seems like a hard way to survive.

edit: Hebden shared images of the settlement, which showed that he would receive £56,921.08 in respect of all historical streaming and download income, dated back to July 2017, in addition to interest calculated at a rate of 5% per year.

Meanwhile, Kate Bush is making 250,000 USD per week due to Stranger Things 4's using her "Running Up That Hill (Deal with God)" and rocketing it to the top of the Spotify charts (she owns the complete rights to the song)

wow. per week? that's crazy. she must be getting 10s of millions of streams. good for her. but still it's an example of how all the gains flow to the top.  i'm not going to google but i know mega pop stars make some good streaming income. beyonce, taylor swift etc.

Well, the key takeaway here is she owns the complete rights - many artists unfortunately don't own their own work, and as a result, only get a portion of any performance rights like from streaming.
