Back in 1994 we didn’t have to choose. No one had to choose.

It Doesn't Matter™
You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.
dcomμnications (WATMM blog, mostly about non-IDM releases, maybe something else, too.)

93/94 was when I discovered Selected Ambient Works 85-92, after seeing it in HMV and the cover looking interesting.

I didn't discover Autechre until I saw Tri Repetae in HMV in 1995, and the cover looked interesting.

So the answer is: In 1994 I preferred Aphex because I didn't know about Autechre yet

I really liked Tri Repetae so in 1995 my answer would probably be Autechre

Then from 96 onwards I'd probably say Aphex again

These days I like both but if I want to just put something on to listen to while I work its probably EOD, Kettel or Aleksi Perala.

There's loads of good stuff around these days because its much easier for people with talent to make electronic music now. No specialist gear needed. Its also much easier for people without talent to make music but thats not too much of a problem.

in 1994, id say this is one of Richard best upbeat track.

maybe the question wasnt clear enough.

I meant, in 1994, if you were to have followed both artists careers up to 1994, which would you have preffered.

Depends wherabouts in 94. Anti and Amber didn't come out til the end of the year. SAW2 had a headstart for the race to my heart.

Picked up SAW 1 in 93. Didn't really know anything about the wider scene. Heard Polygon Window and AI 1 around the same time but didn't have any real grasp of what WARP was. I think the first non-aphex WARP I bought was Virtual State by Richard H Kirk. Id heard of Autechre but I just thought they were pale Aphex imitations. It was probably late 94/95 when I was getting into jungle and heard amber and then tri repetae and anti in early morning after parties and realised how good they were.
