Ryuichi Sakamoto, Oscar-Winning Japanese Composer, Dies at 71

Mr. Sakamoto, whose work with Yellow Magic Orchestra influenced electronic music, composed scores for “The Last Emperor” and “The Revenant.”

Great talent. Big loss. A long and interesting career and a huge back-catalogue of audio treasures.

Even if all he ever recorded was his work with Yellow Magic Orchestra, the man would be a behemoth of musical influence. The impact Sakamoto Ryuichi had can scarcely be overstated. His contributions span far greater than many of his immediate peers. His loss at the age of 71 feels far too soon but he persevered pretty damn well given his cancer.

Damn. I honestly don't know that much about him, but I remember his music vids appearing frequently on MTV AMP back in the late 90s. Will have to check out more of his work as a posthumous tribute.

To keep it real and analog, I'm gonna start posting to WATMM by writing my posts in fountain pen on hemp paper, putting them in bottles, and throwing them into the ocean.

I cried so many times listening to 1996, i'm glad that we've been blessed by his music. What a depressing day.

I knew bits and pieces about him and a little more about YMO before going to see the “Coda” film in the theater. I’m glad I did because it really endeared me to him. He was battling cancer back then and has gone back and forth with his health since. Anyway, I recommend the film for fans or people who want to learn more about him.

So many dope YMO jams btw, but this jam has his stamp all over it (also SOUL TRAIN)…

Ryuichi Sakamoto with daughter Miu w/ a Roland TR-808, c. 1981. YMO's BGM is probably one of the first records to feature the 808, if not the first (the other contender is The Monitors' Nobody Told Me).
