Fennesz will release a new album in september called Mosaic. I really enjoyed Agora and Senzatempo, so I hope this will be a banger. A digital single on may 3rd, and 20 year anniversary (WTF?!) release of Venice in June.

Top stuff as usual. More on the colder wintery side of his catalogue, like Black Sea. The last track with the chorus type effects all over it was something a bit different, the chiming bell sounds it created was very Christmassy.

My goodness this is some good shit once again. I am definitely not the biggest ambient guy but I will never not listen to new Fennesz. Agora is one of the best ambient albums I've ever heard and I am NOT dissapointed about this one either.

Anthony D'Amico:

I consider myself to be a somewhat devoted fan of Christian Fennesz's work, but I confess that I initially found myself a bit underwhelmed by the three pieces that were released in advance of this album, as they all felt more pleasant than revelatory at first listen. Once the full album was released, however, I threw on some headphones to immerse myself more fully in Mosaic and hoped that the expected sublime majesty would hit me eventually. Happily, the revelations started almost immediately and the biggest one was this: casual listening only reveals vibes and melodies, but the true beauty of this album lies far more in how it sounds (and how it flows) than it does in the actual chords and melodies being played. For example, listening to album highlight "Love and the Framed Insects" feels akin to gazing up at the passing clouds while floating on my back in the warm waters near a tropical beach, but the lapping waves keep submerging my ears to warp the sounds of summer bliss into something hallucinatory, unfamiliar, and sometimes otherworldly.

I also look to the long view because of the infrequency of his solo albums, and their disconnect from electronic music more broadly: Though he was on the leading edge of the “laptop music” revolution in the early 2000s, his major works have had little or nothing to do with what’s happening around them for the last 20 years. Rather than seeming out of touch, this disconnect underscores just how deeply personal his work is.

Iirc the vinyl release of Agora was around 6 months after the cd/digital. Maybe we are looking at a similar timeframe.

This is a beautiful, beautiful album.

Good bump. I'd forgotten about this.

I'll relisten and while I didn't dislike it... it was mostly just pleasant for me. I tend to prefer his stuff where the glitch/electroacoustic character is more to the foreground. It's not just a matter of being stuck in the past, I promise you, but he was one of the best at imbuing glitch with melodicism without verging on the saccharine. I don't expect Fennesz to always turn up the sonic fuckery to the max whatsoever but there's better ambient out there, too (by other people). His combining glitch, ambient, and post rock-y moments worked nicely for me on Black Sea. I haven't heard Agora yet but I imagine that will be more my cuppa. But I must stress that just because I didn't like something doesn't mean it was bad necessarily, I just didn't find Mosaic to be for me.
