so imo this is probably album of the year. almost no one i know enjoys this and i'm not expecting my watmm crew to fully embrace it but maybe some of you can dig it.

when i first listened to it i was kinda like wtf. this sounds bad lol. the more i listened, the more fascinated i became. he's completely turning the whole tame impala/mac demarco thing on its head. instead of rich, warm, lush pop production (which mk.gee shown he's capable of on his previous releases) he's exploring a totally strange sound on this album. it's broken, brittle, fragile, blown-out. there's very little bass on this album, it's very slanted into the mid range with weird harsh highs. most of the bass parts seem to be played by a baritone guitar. instead of the kind of guitar distortion that all forms of music seem to embrace, his guitar tone seems to rely more on the sound of break up and clipping that are like the antithesis of production conventional wisdom. the songs are quite beautiful (i especially love the vocal harmonies on "i want") but he's created a very idiosyncratic sound that kind of subverts their prettiness. there's a lot of interesting decisions on this album that honestly do not seem familiar to me and i love how unique it is.

saw him live for this tour and it was completely wild. the crowd was extremely into it. huge line several blocks long before the show. he played one song ("DNM") like 15+ times in a row and the crowd was just freaking out. moshing wildly, crowd surfing, genuinely kind of felt worried a few times that people were gonna fall off the balcony and stuff. you could really feel that something special was happening in the room.

i expect to be roasted for this but i stand by my principles. this shit rules.

Yeah, might be AOTY for me too. Discovered him this last spring and really dug in for a few months. Amazing mix of contemporary DIY vibes and expensive 80s atmospheres. Great ideas on the guitar, too.

Envy you for having had the chance to see him live.

And yeah, DIIV has also been a steady beat this year.

its really interesting but he has some vocalization ticks that i can only describe as "zoomer-coded" which bother me. it's still a great album and i will be listening intently to whatever he makes next

i'd never heard of this guy before but ROCKMAN was played on 6music a few weeks ago and my ears pricked up. sounded quite refreshing amongst all the 'northerners talking over uninspired pseudo post-punk' drivel they love to play on that station.

i'm yet to check out his other stuff, but after seeing this thread i'll be sure to add this geezer to the list!

Yeah, I can fuck with this

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

not listened to anything else but this track just sounds like a mediocre lost Police b-side? maybe there’s more interesting stuff?

they’re going to be on SNL next weekend too…WATMM x SNL crew seems like a weird overlap tbqh
