sounds like political fun. PM says opposition party is too sympathetic to north korea and other "anti state activities".  I'll need to watch at least 4 youtube videos about it before i can consider myself an expert and give my expert opinion.

I have no idea what going on. Read an article this morning and it just said that the South Korean leader thinks that opposition parties are gaining too much power. Article did not say exactly what martial law will entail (is military gonna hunt down opposition or something?)

what a crazy week in geopolitics. Syrian civil war also back in full force, with ‘moderate rebels’ aka jihadists taking over city of Aleppo apparently. With South Korea, Syria, Ukraine, and Israel/gaza/iran/lebanon, I wonder what the common denominator to all of these conflicts is, if indeed there is one?

I don't know much about martial law per se but it reminds of a friend I had in Indonesia. He was openly gay. At least when he visited us here in Europe. A few years ago in the region he lived in there was a call to Sharia, the muslim law being used under god so to speak. A few weeks later we heard that he died from tuberculosis. It all seemed very strange knowing that he had to hide his sexual identity back there only for him to die to a now cureable disease during a sort of witch hunt taking place in his hometown. We still have no clue what happened and probably never will. Agi was a good guy. Wonder if this is done in Korea to silently take out opposition too. I guess it is, what else would you do it for?

President wants state of war, meaning restricting the military because of conflicts.

The military can do a coup d'etat now! This is problematic.

Current Pres (Yoon Suk Yeol) is lame duck - facing impeachment. This was terrible last gasp effort to avoid impeachment. Ironic because Yoon was the head investigator for the prosecution team in the impeachment proceedings against former president Park Geun Hye (who had multiple scandals throughout her presidency, the last of which shed light on the life-long influence on Park by a batshit insane cult leader).

Apparently President Yoon has lifted the state of martial law in response to an absolute smackdown by Korean National Assembly.

Probably expect impeachment proceedings against him soon. His approval rating is in the toilet, (has been for a while), he has multiple scandals against him, and this is probably the final straw.

Yeah apparently it was like 190-0 vote by Parliament to lift martial law. Plus the citizens weren't taking any shit from the military, according to the videos I saw. Seems like it was almost immediately shot down the moment it was put into effect, which is quite impressive.

No doubt a certain president-elect at home is getting inspiration though. I just hope we can muster that same push-back capability, should he try to pull the same shit.

big doubt on that. i mean, congress is half in the bag for him.  some won't have the nerve to resist and others won't have the nerve to go along with him. was a hair's breath away from letting his VP hang on january 6th.

but i'm sure he's taking notes on south korea and how it goes.  but it's kinda not so relevant since the supreme court said he's immune from everything when president.. so, he'll just pardon himself on day one and that's that. the grift will go on.

seems like will be a roller coaster in south korea for a bit though ay?

There is no comparison between martial law in South Korea and martial law in the US. The difference in land mass alone has a huge impact, added to the fact that governors of each state can also impose martial law on their respective states. there is also no comparison between how the South Koreans turned things around so quickly and how it would play out in the US. The Seoul metro area holds more than half the South Korean population, and they can all get to the Blue House/Parliament quickly. The White House/Capitol Building are quite isolated comparatively - certainly the bureaucrats of DC are not going to be the ones going up against the national guard.

Anyhow, as you can imagine, calls for President Yoon to step down have intensified, his own top aides have offered to resign, and the fallout will be massive. Who comes out on top in the aftermath is anybody's guess, but I feel like the way the Yoon government insulted Korean women and young people, a coalition of more leftist parties might be able to form a more progressive government.

Not to toot my own horn here (it was an obvious outcome - Koreans love putting their Presidents to the sword, figuratively and literally) but https://apnews.com/article/south-korea-yoon-martial-law-25a2a7c957e77a19f771b6b7c56a2173

South Korea’s opposition parties Wednesday submitted a motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over the shocking and short-lived martial lawthat drew heavily armed troops to encircle parliament before lawmakers climbed walls to reenter the building and unanimously voted to lift his order.

Impeaching Yoon would require the support of two-thirds of parliament, and at least six justices of the nine-member Constitutional Court would have to endorse it to remove him from office. The motion, submitted jointly by the main liberal opposition Democratic Party and five smaller opposition parties, could be put to a vote as early as Friday.

They’re calling this joker Kim Jong Yoon now.

also, I don’t think this is related at all to Yoon’s last hurrah to keep power but this just happened as well

The global fuckery is really overwhelming at this point

must admit that I did laugh at this, but it turns out that his declaration of martial law may really have been a cry for help, and he really did need a friend: https://apnews.com/article/south-korea-martial-law-3210438b8663fe609bfe4cb8b748a114

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s previous defense minister was stopped from attempting suicide while in detention over last week’s martial law declaration, officials said Wednesday, as President Yoon Suk Yeol’s office resisted a police attempt to search the compound.

I just hope this story can make a dent in removing the stigma associated with mental health issues. Yoon I will pray for you!
