That's unexpected! I have yet to like anything this guy has put out sadly. Funnily enough I was just trying to listen to Heat and Yes like 2 days ago. I think the production is too dry and not really well mixed. Anyway, I'll see what this does for me

yeah agreed. seems super overrated considering how many records and fancy pressings he gets... i'll listen but shinichi?.... you're on watch.

also i know it's boomkat but... really?

This seems to have a little bit more meat on the bones than his other projects, althought my criticism still remains true for this one. Especially the piano's mr Shinichi uses rub me the wrong way. Idk, it sounds almost frooty-loops-ey or sum. Dislike.

Other than that, some cuts are nice, tracks are hard to discern. It doesn't feel as stripped down (in a bad way) as his other sjeiss but the mixing is still trash.

🙂

"deep techno" spotify algo playlist type of guy

I think the dry, idiosyncratic production is one of his major selling points, I suppose you either like it or you don't.

Personally I love it, it has a unique, hyperreal and almost cartoonishly sugary vibe that I find a refreshing antidote to the masses of dark, rumbley, muscular techno/house out there. It sounds strangely fragile and delicate like you could blow it away like a dandelion. It reminds me a lot of the quote from Mike Paradinas about hearing Isoprophlex for the first time and being marvelled at how the strings sounded like they were somehow painted on. I think its the same level of thinking outside the box, re: production.

Havent heard this one yet but I know I will love it, he hasn't let me down so far.

Sadly this is the only track I really like. If the rest of the album had this more dreamy downtempo chill electronica vibe I would have enjoyed it so much more!

The rest of the tracks seems like some synth pads loops and then he just doing some raw drum machine jams on top of that

I was trying to figure out the theme of this record, he is usually quite direct with the titles, artwork etc. I suppose discipline suggests a kind of repeated practice and mastery, and the record is a bit more involved with production tricks, theres more stereo field trickery and delay techniques. Discipline could also mean the strength of mind to not be tempted by easy pleasures, and the trax are generally a bit more subdued and understated than the regular. I was enjoying the record towards its conclusion, I was getting hints of Terrence Dixon amd Jamal Moss - but I felt it was missing the killer track, then the last 2 played and I was relieved, yes here we are its one of those two.

I have absolutely no idea. I quite like the Boomkat blurbs tho. I know they are endlessly ridiculed, and the purple prose can get a bit silly but I find them quite entertaining. Theres only so many ways to hype up a techno record  so I do appreciate them trying to go a bit James Joyce sometimes.

I have to admit I don’t understand all the praise this guy gets. It sounds like very basic and straight ahead techno to me.

Well… maybe it’s the point ?

So why this over so many very similar records that get ignored?

Yes but at the same time inimitable, hardest thing to achieve imo

I don't know, I can ask the same question about Stinson's Lifestyles Of The Laptop Café, some people consider it's a masterpiece when others think it's bland and boring...

I think in many ways it is just straight up techno, it isn't doing much different structurally, rhythmically, even the mood or flavour or whatever. But it is the textures that make it stand out above the rest. When I first heard the track Butterfly Effect 10 years ago, it made me sit up and listen and say wtf is this?. The decision to use such a cheap sounding tremolo electric piano playing just 2 notes mixed really high as the main hook made me think the guy had some serious confidence. Then the fact it held my attention for the full 10 minutes and have this beautiful melancholy mood about it, Ive been in love ever since.
