I need mixing/mastering help!

Recommended Posts

I'm having a bit of a hard time putting together decent sounding mixes of my post-rock tracks, the clean sections sound ok but I just can't get the 'heavy' parts to sound non-mushy.. What do I have to do in order to make the heavy sections sound nice and crisp, with some amount of space? I've been briefly playing around with compression and have managed to get a rather fullon sound where the drum hits make the whole track dip, but I want something a little more 'stable' I guess.

Any general tips/advice?

Well first, I'm going to try to re-do the end section in what was previously known as Plasma Cuts:

It just doesn't sit right with me, after listening to it a few times. Generally, if I can get that sounding good, I can use that as an auditory guideline for the rest of the tracks.

Thanks!

Search for better drum samples, I think this can do a lot for yer mix. The ones you have now are muffled and muddy and have freqs in the same range as the distortion.

The drums in the last section were recorded live, and that's pretty much an unprocessed recording, I covered the drum kit with a blanket, now that I listen a month or so later I don't think this was such an awesome idea hehe.

I think I'll just re-record the drums, I'm a better drummer now anyway.

I know a lot of places will record each drum through an individual mic with overheads and will pan each track. I would reccomend that, if possible.

Yeah I've thought about that, but the only way I could achieve that is by recording the same drums over and over with different mic placement hehe.. Or I could just buy a few cheap mics and put them all into my mixer, then from that into my soundcard.
