So I have a complete album I am sitting on.

Recommended Posts

So I have this album called "Marshmellow Farm" its about 20 tracks long. I've sent it to a few friends, all have said it was an amazing album. Sometime I even love it. But I am real hard on my music. I would like for it to be heard. I did the net release thing before and I don't think it got heard by alot of people. So I am wondering where should I go from here.

where did u release on the net?

i'd use the views of the peeps here as a litmus to see if it's worth putting out.

if so, you have 2 options:

finance a CD or Vinyl release yourself and put out under your own label.

or

get it off to as many suitable labels as people can suggest and look for a deal.

I recommend tracking down a reputable net label who can do a fair amount of promotion for your tunes. I know a lot of people have a thing against net labels, especially free ones, but the internet community is strong. If you can find a decent label who actually cares about the material they release, I think you might have better luck than in your previous experience. I hooked up with Kikapu (rip) for my first release in 2005 and it managed to get a hell of a lot of attention. Best of luck and hopefully we can hear this bad boy soon!

This thread is still quite relevant, this is indeed a great album and Spore is having a hard time figuring out how to promote it efficiently. Marshmallow Farm was just put on the Lights Set North's bandcamp here in the last couple weeks though finally.

I'd strongly advise against this advice. Take, for instance, acid music. WATMM generally hates it. However, I just got back from BLOC and believe me, acid is in fact alive and kicking ass.

Haha yeah, watmm isn't the end all say all if something has artistic legs or not. There are so many variables to doing a survey of sorts in trying to find out the level popularity something will have. You could have hundreds of record company A&R guys say you suck and then sell a couple millions albums, that's happened many times.

And Just in general you don't need a "litmus test to see if it's worth putting out," I don't mean this in a bad way but it's not like you've got some huge public reputation to care about, of course this thread is mad old but in general practice, send the record around and see if anyone picks it up, or put it out yourself if no one will. If it's no good then no one will care and then you're no further behind than previously, and if it IS good then you'll start to get some people listening to you which, no matter how many there are, is ALWAYS a good thing. I say don't give a damn about what others think of it, your heros sure don't.

yup. there is only one way to go about this. do what you want, when you want, for yourself, at all times. it might be hard to figure out what exactly it is that you really want, but go that way.

Well for those of you that have heard my music, any labels you would recommend?

Karakasa Music

Just sayin'. It's been a blast being on Karakasa as it's been doing more and more and everyone on it's awesome. You might not get a bajillion listens, but I know that at least Ben, Sneaks, and I promote the crap out of every release when we get the chance. I think you'd be a badass addition.

If you want to really get it out there, though, send it to every label you like and then wait a few weeks and take your pick of the yes's. For smaller but cool netlabels, I'd recommend Complex Sound Sagacity, Beardology, and Them Records off the top of my head. I know more, but I just can't think of them at the moment.

WATMM hates acid? news to me! you wouldn't know it by the overwhelming amount of acid being made on this very forum

Haha exactly what I was thinking... Really the only electronic genre that seems to be disliked across the board here would be dubstep, and with good reason!
