Cubase isn't compatible with my new MacBook Intel DualCore

Recommended Posts

i've been running cubase sx for about 2 years on my old machine, but recently had the opportunity to get a macbook intel dualcore for free. i know that steinberg is planning on porting Cubase over to Intel in the future, but i need something to hold me over in the meantime. the two recommendations i hear the most are logic pro 6.2 and ableton live 5.

which one of these two is best for our brand of audio creation? are there any other progs you'd recommend as well?

cheers...i really appreciate the help. i've got a computer that's 6 times faster than the one i used to record with, and i'd love to see what it's capable of.

Just to be extra-helpful I'll come in and say exactly the opposite: since discovering Ableton I have had no desire to use anything else ever again. Pretty much  I think it's the sort of program that you "get" really quickly if it's for you and discard really quickly if not, so I reccomend just trying out the demo, doing the tutorials, and getting a feel for it that way. If you music has a live/improvisational element then it's unbeatable I think.

Congrats on the free macbook intel dualcore! Where can I sign up for this? :)
the trick is to have apple screw you over several times, and then get put on hold for 5 1/2 hours as you insist to speak with the top fat cat, threatening with a law suit unless you get a new machine. so, make sure your phone battery is nice and charged, and preferably buy a headset and a shitload of snacks. you'll be in for the long haul. and remember to stay hydrated. hydration is very important.

are you trying to run cubase through bootcamp windows? That should work right?
i suppose that might be possible, but i ran cubase on my old iBook. the only version i have is SX for Mac. here's a question thought..would it be possible to open my old mac cubase files with a windows bootcamp version of cubase?

thanks for the other recommendations, guys. what i'll probably do is hope i can find a way to get my hands on both ableton and logic pro, and then go from there. the challenge is getting the programs somewhere...this whole thing has made me pretty familiar with the concept that torrents fucking suck.

and there's no way i'm paying $999 for a piece of software until that software makes me a rich bastard, or can generate beautiful women a la Weird Science.

lolz. digital performer never fails to make me STABBY. maybe it works if you're a japanese video game composor, or the crystal method.

why would it make you stabby? it's the easiest to use, most stable DAW for osx.

at my job we work with both DP and Logic.

I hate DP with a passion. So. Much.

I reccomend Logic. Not only do you get a full featured sequencer/audio program, you get shit loads of plugins, including some very quality instruments (synths, sampler, physcial modeling synth, analoge style drum machine) that are all qaulity. The 1000 price tag is worth it considering you could seriously write entire albums with no other software.

again, what about it do you hate? dp comes with a bunch of plugins too, now including virtual instruments that don't suck too.

i also ask because i've never used logic, heard lots of good and bad things about it though.

its a very hard thing to describe. its kind of asking someone why they don't like the taste of a particular food. They'd probably just say "because it tastes gross, I can't explain it". I just don't like its layout, its aesthetic design, and how editing is done for various features. It just never seems right. When I sat down with Logic for the first time, even though I had much to learn, I had this feeling of "now this is what a sequencer should be."

I'm know you use DP, and I'm not saying people who use it suck, or don't know what they are doing, or any of that. Hell, autechre use it. It's truely a matter of just how my brain works and percieves stuff.

Yeah, I saw those instruments, they looked pretty nice, but didn't look like they got very deep. Haven't had a chance to try them out. Do you like them? What would be awesome, is if users of DP got Mach 5, MX4, Ethnic Instrument, and Symphonic Instrument with it for free.

that's weird because (possibly due to my coming to electronic music/DAW's from a guitarist/vocalist/band producing background) dp always seemed far and away the most straightforward easy to understand DAW, it's like a mixing board and you select inputs and outputs and assign effects to channels and such. i've wanted to try out logic, but have always been daunted by the infamous learning curve (and price, and fact that i have and can make music with dp already)

they're ok. i mean having reaktor and kontakt and moog modular v i don't end up using them, but if you had nothing else you could make decent sounding tracks with them.

maybe someday. i could see them coming out with a higher priced package of dp (since dp is the cheapest of the major DAW's) that came with it maybe.

theres a place in boston that sells logic for 300 bucks to students. find a student, and work something out, and you're set...

and if you ever wanted someone to give you an intro/crash course on logic, I'd be happy to

I couldn't have said it better myself

yea i saw places to get logic pro for $500 with a student discount, but it says student versions are not eligable for future upgrades.

but yea you live near me, can i check logic out on your system sometime soon and you could probably give me a better perspective on how to use it and why it's so good. do you have a laptop?

Well, I ended up finding a copy of Logic Express 7.2, which runs native on the Intel processor. So far, it has a great tool set (softsynths, effects, etc), but really lacks in the audio chopping department. Is there any way at all to detect hitpoints in Logic like you can in Cubase? Without this tool, a lot of my work gets a lot more tedious.

Also working on getting a copy of Ableton Live 5 though...I'll post back here when I have it installed and running.

Cheers.

P.S. Lovely brambly post, Mr. Luke.

logic express is majorly cut down from logic pro... I really dont know what it does and doesnt have... but I do know that logic pro does have the peak detection function you are talking about. its an option in a menu in the audio window.

any idea how to upgrade from logic express to logic pro without the actual software discs?

i know we're not able to discuss warez on this forum, but please PM me if you have any information.

thanks to everyone for your help....i'm still waiting on Ableton 5.2, but I should have it soon.

cheers.
