firewire trouble

right so i bought a focusrite sapphire LE interface today, i was gonna go usb but then i thought "lets get in on this here firewire craic, theres a port for it on my laptop", turns out there isn't, the bigass firewire lead from the interface is about 5 times the size of the port. So i googled it and found out that there's two different sizes of firewire port, should i be ragin and take it back to the shop or is there an adaptor lead i can get... and in that case would it affect how well the thing works?

just do a google search for "6-pin to 4-pin firewire".

ah, that sounds ok then, so using one of these adaptor cables won't give be shit latency or anything right?

no, the only difference is you will lose bus-power.

so if your interface can be powered without a wall-wart (via firewire) you will need the power adapter when you run off your laptop (4-pin).

i just got a firewire 410 interface, i found a 6-pin firewire cable at Target that comes with two 6pin-to-4pin adapters for about $13. funny how i've never seen these at compusa or bestbuy.

you can get a cardbus adapter, but they're a bit pricey

blicero is right - all you need is a 4-pin fw cable...for a few quid. There is a wall wart that (should) come with the saff LE - just means you need 2 power points, one for lappy and one for saffire.

no hass tho.

what'shisnuts didn't explain the difference between usinf the interface with 4-pin vs. 6-pin.
