midi controller and ableton knob tweakage

so im playing live again this saturday and again, i dont have enough knobs. i have an emu xboard25 with all this 16channel/patch storage wotsits that i dont really use or know how to work. would it be possible to assign the knobs to different controls, then select a different patch which has the same knobs assigned to others (thereby allowing me to set cutoff/pitchbends for the multitude of synths i have open)? i already tried this to no avail. whats the patch stuff for?

ok, ive worked out how to do it - i select a different midi channel and assign it there. whats the patches for then? i have a software emu xboard control thingy which looks very complex...
