looking for a dirty old synth

Recommended Posts

well, down the road anyway. i want it to be like 80's, doesn't matter if it has keys or not but it has to have midi. it also has to be cheap. i don't want a juno or some shit. something obscure and dirty and fuzzy

maybe an fm synth would be cool

hook me up with some ideasi boys, Cheers. :boc:

If it's cheap and digital, why not try to track down a Yamaha DX100? My mate's got one from his attic and I can't imagine it being worth anything because it's so grubby and hard to use. But you can get some fairly sick sounds of it if you can get your head around its evil programming and the hooky voodoo of FM synthesis

ok, i'll also add rack mountable as a prerequisite. keep the suggestions rolling. The tx81z looks delious. mu-ziq uses that, awesome

just list cheap electronic music rackmounts please. ones that are electronic music icons used

i got some help from another forum and i'm currently looking at these synths

yamaha tg 77

roland mks 80

roland mks 70

casio VZ-10m

oberheim matrix 1000

i guess i will slowly get one after another on ebay when my budget allows it

:omg: are you joking?

not really. are you aghast that i said "electronic music icon" or "cheap rackmount"

what would be smarter to go with an mpc: those rack synths or a nord modular which i can sample?

these bits: "electronic music rackmounts", "electronic music icons used"

mks 80 hehe cheap?

i'd still say Korg EX-80. it's even got analogue filter, ready to make dirrrrrrty sounds (and you can mod it really easily for awesome filter tweaking action!!!)

go here and check out the samples!

http://www.synthmod.net/korg/moog_slayer/

dx100 = solid bass = worth it for that alone

think orbital chime and halcyon and on - that's the bass

what a horrible dirty beautiful bass it is

Definately the poly-800. I bought 1 of a nz auction site about 2 weeks ago, so cheesy, and crap, and nostalgic, and wicked cool. Really inspiring cuz it's so limited yet moldable, but just wicked and different. I had it functioning for a whole 3 days before i attempted the moog slayer mod and killed it. Typical how i am the one in 1 million that fucked it up. I almost cried, and still want to. PLEASE, if there are any NZ EKT'ers in here that know anything about electronics or know of anywhere to get my synth repaired in this god-forsaken counrty. Please tell me!!!. But yeah, get one of these. Or a yamaha TG-33, i almost bought one of these too.

You want something dirty and old, but also rackmounted and are considering a modular?

This thread is never going to get anywhere.

Have to agree with mosca thusfar though...guess that's the closest.

Maybe an fb01 if you want dirt cheap?

And it's got 'that bass'.

Will need an editor with that though.

yeah i guess i'm open to suggestions. this thread has already been enough help though. the plan is to buy a multitimbral new-age synth first that i can us by itself to create beats, then slowly but surely ,, collect old grimey synthesizers. :phone:

I third or fourth the TX81Z.

As well as all the nice electronic music Mu-Ziq sounds, it's got "extra waveforms" on top of the standard FM sine. These turn out to just be harmonically complex (ie distorted sounding) versions of sine waves. Pretty much the second you add in one of these waves, it sounds gritty and nasty and grimey.

Oh, and it's 8 part multitimbral, so nowhere near as crippled in a MIDI environment as yer typical old synth.

And it can do supar low junglist sine throbs.

And did I mention it's CHEAP AS BLOODY FUCK???
