Analog Modeling

Recommended Posts

So I ran across this today:

Prodyssey_ASB.jpg

This is like a hardware version of the very first ever synth I played with, the TS404 from Hammerhead. Of course that is a derivative itself, but it was a sheer joy to tweak.

I'm new to synthesis, and I have an EMX-1. I chose this instrument based on the similarity of its synth functionality to the aforementioned TS404. What I enjoy most about synthesis is the process of making sounds, the actual knob twiddling aspects.

Being also a pauper, I'm unable to afford true analog, but I'm quite attracted to dedicated machines and devices for sound creation. It may be just because of my interest that I'm noticing this, but with some recent arrivals like the one above and the new Korg RADIAS synth, among many others, it almost seems like there’s increasing popularity in the world of Virtual Analog.

For me, this is a lovely blend of some of the stability and multiplicity that digital has to offer, coupling with the intuitive, instantaneous and “live” feel of knobs, buttons, and signal paths. I’ve found my own humble synth to be of excellent quality, and its limitations (imho) add character and challenge my creativity in ways that an unlimited instrument might not.

Any thoughts on the subject? Are we experiencing a trend toward VA synthesis? Is it a good thing? Please post your opinions and experiences.

And keep t3h mudslinging to a minimum.

P.S. Microsoft word does not spell check “t3h”

It's not really as new as you'd think... check out machines like the Nord Lead, Nord Electro, Access Virus, etc, the concept is actually about a decade old.

As a dedicated Nord Modular owner, I could in no waydisuade you from going the virtual analog route. Indeed, if you have an interest in Synthesis and hardware, there's little in my mind better for learning (and using) than a Nord Modular (or Micro Modular on a budget). The G2's are still a bit too expensive I think...

If the modular aspect is a bit too much, I would think an older Nord Lead (the NL 2's are going pretty cheap these days too), or maybe an Access Virus would be well suited to yor tastes...

VA synthesis is a great thing. In my opinion at least. I really hate it when they try to model the warbles and stuff that makes an analog synth unique though. Id rather have a really good quality sound from a well designed synth.

I'll have to check in to the nords and the virus. I used to have an ensoniq FIZMO back in the day, which I regret losing, but it had excellent realtime control, and I did enjoy making sounds. Unfortunately my massive ignorance and a whopping hospital bill trumped that... :unhappy:

In terms of modular stuff (if I understand correctly here) I'm quite into it, not being a keyboardist primarily. I enjoy programming and lots of realtime modulation, so I don't mind things not being in a keyboard format. I use keys more for realtime sequencing (as opposed to step sequencing) but I like to modulate according to the capabilities of the machine after I get basic melodies/basslines down. I hope to eventually expand my gear to include some of these modular VA's once I've taken care of more of the basics (proper monitors and a mixer, prolly a sampler as well).

I suppose there is a line to be respected in modeling, with regard to how far do you push the envelope on mimicing the original. I wouldn't *specifically* want a machine to sound exactly like an original- I'd want it to be its own instrument. The point for me with VA synthesis is more in the process, and the hands on control. That is where I'd want replication to be pretty close to the original, or quite in the spirit of the original. Digital machines+analog style hands on control=happy LJG.

Sweet deal. I always wanted a Fizmo, fantastic sounding little box. Also have to chuckle at the super gay purple color scheme. Never found one available to buy though, and now, it would be a bit redundant next to my K5000s....

Definately check out the Nord Modular series. You can pick up a used Micro Modular for $350-$500 now and it has plenty of real time virutal analog goodness for you to play with to your hearts content.
