pylonbitch
except there's no cs 80 in the first two boc albums... the ones that everyone claims has the cs-80 as the signature sound. no cs80. how's that for boc obsessive.(more sound source obsessive.) Guest Iain C
Weird, I too was taken in by this BoC legend. However, I still think Vangelis used it on the Blade Runner soundtrack... now that's some sweet CS 80 Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/1503-attn-boc-sessives/#findComment-28746 Share on other sites
Guest boffin
the cs80 thing has got to be shite cos it doesn't sound right at all. i've only heard cs40 stuff for real but it's the same with 4 less voices afaik. i like the way the voices work and the seperate-everything-for-each oscillator which is cool but i'm not that keen on the sound most of the time. i think it was some fannybaws on here that was all 'OMG!! boc secret == teh cs80!!!!' etc. etc. after warezing the software one and pressing some presets. Guest Iain C
Hmm, I'm sure I read somewhere that he did... Yeah, it says so at vintagesynth.com. I guess it could be wrong, I'm no expert on analogue gear, at all. Still, what a soundtrack  Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/1503-attn-boc-sessives/#findComment-28794 Share on other sites
Severian
Vangelis is/was a big fan of the CS-80, and it's definatly the signature sound of the Bladerunner soundtrack. (I also find this statement: "why would he have used a then 10 year old synth on a futuristic soundtrack?" very silly) Edited December 15, 2005 by Severian Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/1503-attn-boc-sessives/#findComment-28797 Share on other sites

I thought the CS-80 specialised in "deep" and "thick" - but that's from listening to BOC, which is of course, wrong. My Roland MKS-50 ($110) has several factory patches that are just Blade Runner to a "T", so no need to spend $2500 recreating the sound... Vangelis coulda used a Juno 106 and saved himself a whole lot of time and back-strain :stuart: Severian said: (I also find this statement: "why would he have used a then 10 year old synth on a futuristic soundtrack?" very silly) It was 1983 - futurism wasn't retro yet! Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/1503-attn-boc-sessives/#findComment-28800 Share on other sites
Severian
The Juno series did come out about 4 years later than Bladerunner, so our greek composing chum would have had to do a brief time-travel expedition :P The CS-80 can do deep and thick too... but so can many other synths. It'd be awesome to own one of course, but I'm not an analogue purist so I'm quite happy with the software version of it until I win the lottery or something. (Edit: To be honest, it's more likely that BoC use Juno's rather than the CS-80... I mean, which one's the more bank-account and maintainance-friendly synth? :) ) Edited December 15, 2005 by Severian Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/1503-attn-boc-sessives/#findComment-28841 Share on other sites

Guest noradrenalin
haha my mc-202 can do the boc sound if i work at it. i would still buy a cs-80 if i had the extra money. Paulie Walnuts
Check out the opening chords to Vangelis' Chariots of Fire... THAT's the real CS-80 sound through and through... Amazing synth... You can get the exact same sound out of a CS-60 with a delay and chorus... pylonbitch
baladerunner uses quite a bit of cs-80. if you want to hear it in full effect listen to some of stevie wonder's more synthy stuff. top synth... couldn't be assed carting it about or tuning it every ten minutes though. It's ridiculously heavy - The shape and size makes it almost impossible to move without at least 3 people... But tuning it's what you don't want to do... The natural detuning of those CS synths is 90% of the sound... It's not that bad, it's not like an out of tune piano or guitar, which sounds horrible - It's just a subtle phasing effect when you play chords... I think BOC get the tuning even less stable by adding layer on layer of wow and flutter... Guest noradrenalin
detuned guitars are the shit. i keep my bass out of tune just because i like it that way. i even detune my synths to match. Guest Iain C
I'm sure I read someone here say they heard a Reaktor patch on geogaddi... At the end of the day, who's honestly that bothered? They could use nothing but Arturia plugins for all I care, as long as the music's as BoCgasmic as ever Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/1503-attn-boc-sessives/#findComment-30873 Share on other sites

Are you sure? Because the only album I've heard of theirs which doesn't sound like almost every synth part is CS80 is Twoism... They might use a CS70 or 60, or maybe (at a stretch) an Oberheim OB8, but it's a very distinctive sound... if it was Arturia plug-ins it would be like Hendrix playing through a Line 6 Pod... Now THATs interesting.
