Guest Robotussin
so the school where i work has recording facilities that i can use for free. i can play and i can edit, but i basically have no idea what i'm doing when it comes to recording acoustic sound. here's what i'm trying to record: + vocals (high stuff, like thom yorke/beach boys/sigur ros) + acoustic guitar + guitar through a marshall tube amp + various electronic/synth elements through said tube amp/monitors + drums + various handclaps, percussion, yelling, whatever + maybe piano, if i can be sneak the mics out of the studio and into a practice room and here are the microphones i have at my disposal + 3 AKG C414s + Rode Classic + Sennheiser MD421 + Sennheiser MD441 + Sennheiser MKH-40 + Earthworks TC 30K + Neumann TLM193 + Electrovoice RE50 + 2 SM81-LCs + 2 SM57s + 2 SM58s any ideas on what would be great for what? i feel like i have a huge opportunity here and i want to get everything i can out of it. Guest aeser
+ vocals (high stuff, like thom yorke/beach boys/sigur ros) + Neumann TLM193 + acoustic guitar + Neumann TLM193 + guitar through a marshall tube amp + Sennheiser MD421 + various electronic/synth elements through said tube amp/monitors + Sennheiser MD421 + drums + Sennheiser MD421's on the kick, and toms, sm57 on the snare, nicest pair of large diaphram conensers as overheads, get the whole drum kit sound first sounding amazing only with the overheads, then bring in the other mic's to boost said drums + various handclaps, percussion, yelling, whatever + Neumann TLM193 + maybe piano, if i can be sneak the mics out of the studio and into a practice room + Neumann TLM193 (but try all of them) it also depends heavily on what you have for mic pre amps. Guest Robotussin
thanks aeser. i used the neumann last night for vocals and it sounded really good. moak - that was part of the plan, to use live playing along with sampling the individual drums and importing them into battery/kontakt/whatever and controlling them with a padkontrol. no idea when i'll have them, but i'll send them over when i do. it's awesome using this shit for free. it's like shopping with someone else's money. Guest analogue wings
Everything Aeser said, except with an SM57 on anything with a speaker. Touching the grill and pointing directly at the centre of the cone. chenGOD
yeah the neumann is fucking ridiculous for vox. The AKG C414 would do pretty damn nicely too, especially if you can get a good singer. so what Aeser and Analogue Wings said. The rode classic would be money for the acoustic guitar though.
