azatoth
just got this today and it's very very good. after listening to it a few times it's started to grow on me and the orb and 90s electronic nod in the below text is quite true. and the artwork is again superb as is to be expected from sending orbs. defo a favourite label of mine. Quote Tracks: 01 Vega Libre 11:49 02 Vega Libre: The Citadel 03:35 03 Vega Libre: The Marvel 09:18 04 Vega Libre: Entering Next 05:10 05 Vega Libre: Last Hours 03:56 06 Vega Libre: Sleeping World 11:04 07 Vega Libre: Tetsu Inoue Remix 05:48 Release info: vocals track 4 by phinx, track 7 remixed by Tetsu Inoue Secede, or Lennard van der Last (1984) has built quite a fanbase since his first Sending Orbs album Tryshasla. Now, about 1.5 year later, he finally delivers his second concerto for electronica on Sending Orbs: Vega Libre. A mini-album CD, 7 tracks running over 50 minutes, accompanied by a 4-track EP on enthralling orange coloured vinyl. Just like its predecessor the story behind Vega Libre deals with something coming at its end; where Tryshasla was a holiday into a dreamland of a person dying, Vega Libre is based on the idea of an apocalyptic party. There is splendid artwork from Sending Orbs resident Jeroen Advocaat creating the right atmosphere for this view. The exaltic, hiphopbeated opener /slash title track is the leitmotiv of Vega Libre. Notice how specific sounds and melodies keep recurring throughout the cd and much more than on Tryshasla there is room for percussion and repetition. Hearing it blend so well with all the warmth and grooviness of the scapes surrounding them you could really state that there's something very 90s, very electronic about this release. This music brings our minds back to the early days of the Future Sound of London and The Orb, when life was somewhat good and electronica somewhat monumental; never before has Lennard succeeded so gloriously in capturing this spirit of the musical era we love so much at Sending Orbs. Proving this point one of Secede's examples from the old times, ambient grandfather and grandmaster Tetsu Inoue, was so charmed with the material that he agreed to do a remix. Vega Libre is like the recent revival of the Zeppelin airship: traditional but very modern, highly sophisticated and more beautiful than ever before. It is voluptuous music full of well-placed samples and detail, with a fantastic pace. Where other electronica nowadays seems to get colder and angrier, Secede manages to characterize himself as the antipode: his latest opus is electrifying and sensual. Guest JOSEF
i'm in two minds about this- some stuff i've heard in the past has been wikkid, and other stuff's been cringeworthily bad. i'll listen to some FREE LEGAL SNIPPETS before buying. Guest JOSEF
boomkat review: Quote The cover of Dutch ‘musician’ Secede’s latest album for the (until now) reliable Sending Orbs label depicts what looks like the end of the world – alien spaceships overhead and large explosions below, all set it reddish hues to give the impression of burning. Funny, because these are exactly the images that come flashing through my minds eye as I attempt to listen to this drivel without using a hooked wire to extract the precious grey matter from through my nostril. ‘Vega Libre’ (I’d translate but I really can’t be bothered) is an album which makes me want to see the world end, really if people can make music this unashamedly awful then there’s nothing to live for. I truly mean it – it’s like Mr. Secede has gone through with a tick sheet of everything you should never, ever do in music; New Age – check, Psychedelic Trance – check, Proto-Trip Hop cheese – check, crap male vocals – check, crap female vocals – check, Euro Dance – check. I’m certain there are torture camps somewhere in the world that had this album commissioned from the Netherlands ready and waiting for the time I’m going to be arrested for crimes against music journalism so I’m investing in some cyanide capsules just in case. Anything, really anything (and that includes Morris dancing) would be better than enduring another second of this undiluted dross ever, ever again. Strangely enough the record ends on a remix by Japanese ambient pioneer Tetsu Inoue, but sadly at this point I’d already lost the will to live and thrown the cd into lake with a lead weight attached... !! azatoth
lol, yeah the boomkat review is hilarous. sounds like the dude has a beef. i don't really hear anything of the things he describes in that review. well, i guess not all reviews of boomkat be of "essential, must have" records.
