Avey Tare & Kria Brekkan - Pullhair Rubeye

Sorry for all my Animal Collective-related posts lately, but I find this stuff a lot more exciting than any electronic music release at the moment...

Avey Tare is Dave Portner of Animal Collective and Kria Brekkan is Kristin Anna Valtysdottir formerly of the band múm. The two met a few years back and started playing music together in the summer of 2005. Recently they married and now live together in New York City.

Avey Tare and Kria Brekkan recorded their debut collaboration Pullhair Rubeye with guitars and piano on an eight track in their practice space in Brooklyn. Then they traveled to upstate New York where the record was mixed down onto a two track borrowed from a friend who bought it at a garage sale for a dollar. Just as the two were completing the mix, the two track broke down and Avey and Kria didn’t hear the mixes until two months later when they obtained another two track. After this short vacation, they were surprised by the sounds they had made.

Regardless of HOW they made their sounds, Avey Tare and Kria Brekkan’s Pullhair Rubeye is a motley collection of fun and somber songs. Some of the tracks are instrumental, textured, and trancelike. They sound like they could come from another world. Other songs are lyrically based, calmer, more introspective. These sound like direct transmissions from within.

woah. dint know they were married. had no idea they made an album. total shock. this could be great. although which is avey in animal collective? singer? electronics guy? i reckon hes the second singer who makes all the vocal noises.

got anymore info on this album?

Haha, I was waiting for you Andy- we have similar taste most of the time it seems :)

This caught me off guard as well, I had no idea... It could be really nice or could be a mess, hard to tell really but I'm very curious to find out. Avey is the lead singer of AC if you can call him that...

The info I got is from the Paw Tracks site here. Just scroll down a little or click on Avey and Kria Brekkan.

are you an ariel pink fan? i never got into that sound myself

No, what I've heard really hasn't done much for me either, but I haven't really given it much of a chance- maybe I'll try again sometime :)

AC are the best thing around at the moment. Really looking forward to this release, especially from the description provided in this thread.

Ariel Pink is too deliberately disjointed and sounding like a bad acid trip for my liking. I am only basing that on one album though.

Yes, thanks for the link my good man, I think this sounds exactly like I wanted it to  . Can't wait to hear the album!

ieafs, I listened to some samples of The Doldrums yesterday and it sounded pretty nice, that might be the Ariel I need to check out. Your Jewelled Antler avatar is sweet btw.

and yeah, i love all the JA artwork... to be honest i've only heard one record on there but it was the sleeves that first attracted me!

Cool, as far as JA goes, they have so many releases between various individuals and groups that it's hard to know where to begin. I have stuff by Thuja, The Blithe Sons, Hala Strana, Skygreen Leopards and The Birdtree (most of these groups include Glenn Donaldson). I would recommend anything by these incarnantions...

sorry but i hate it. it sounds like theyre being super weird just for the sake of being weird, not for melody or anything musical. i will listen to it again though...

Got it. Is it meant to all be backwards?

is it? maybe a humourous leak?

That's what I just commented on a blog (Gorilla vs. Bear). Has to be just to mess with the leakers. Why would you put that much time into a full album of tracks and just reverse every one? No way...

yeah the leak is the real thing. the backwardness was intentional

Its not really an issue of prefering the songs backwards. Its more of the fact that this is a release we wanted to put out. It has a foreign/other quality and as you said nice warm ambient quality that we like. I wouldnt really say its a noise record. Ive put tons and tons of work into songs noone will ever hear why should it stop me from doing what i want with them. its just because you guys know the songs and can even hear them reversed on your computers that makes you have all these confused thoughts. If you couldnt download bootlegs of the songs and couldnt hear them reversed then you would just say fuck this record sucks..or cool this record rules and youd let it grow on you or you wouldnt. Youd find a place where it works or you wouldnt. Its not hard to flip a reel around and hear it backwards or even decide that it sounds sweet and its not really that bizzare of a record either or that difficult if you can get over the fact that its backwards you dont even need a computer. If you just pass it off as backwards sure ofcourse its not revolutionary or "experimental" youve been able to flip tape for more or less almost 100 years now why would i think its experimental??? Ive heard "i am sitting in a room" okay, i know what experimental music is (hehehe joke).

Its also clear that the bulk of our fanbase is able to put the thing on their computers and listen to it the other way so its not as if we didnt know that was gonna happen either. we dont think it should be heard that way cause songs are sped up, dont have vocals etc. but we know that wont stop you so do what you like, and in a way that is cool.

If there wasnt so much hype and so much of an expectation for us to put out this killer "experimental pop record" then alot of you might never even hear about this record. But wed still be into it and would have faith that some people would too.

we offer this cause we think it is somthing special we made (as equally special as the songs forward) and different from what youve heard and songs that you can get else where. We like the textures and the melodies. And honestly somthing we think our fans can digest. If i thought it was just a "noise record" i wouldnt put it out. If your just passing judgment cause of what youve heard other people say you should atleast check out the record.

by the way it was the 21st of december when we decided this. I think it was a combination of of being stuck in nyc for christmas and seeing that new david lynch movie, so if youre that bummed you can blame the weather and david lynch.

personally i like how it is, backwards (haven't listened to it the other way yet though).

Just read this as well, very interesting. They should release a double disk wth both versions
