In his liner notes to this collection, Radiohead’s experimental driving force and all-round guitar hero, Jonny Greenwood remarks that it’s a rare honour to be asked to put together a Trojan compilation and that in his “panic at not feeling qualified” he’d listened exclusively to reggae for the six months leading up to assembling this playlist. The quality and variety of the tracks assembled here certainly suggests a scholarly attention to detail, ranging from the summery pop of Marcia Griffith’s ‘Gypsy Man’ via the slow, soulful skank of The Heptones’ ‘Cool Rasta’ to the more experimentally inclined productions of Lee Perry, ‘Bionic Rats’ and ‘Black Panta’. In fact, it seems that Greenwood has a particular interest in the recording techniques of 1970s dub. Going back to those liner notes, he compares an artist like Perry and his work at this time to the experiments of The Beatles and even Stockhausen. Certainly, there’s plenty of evidence of some pretty far-out studio work here. Check out the machine gun slapback echo of Johnny Clarke’s ‘A Ruffer Version’ in all its glorious wonkiness. This year marks Trojan’s 40th birthday, and there’s a line of artists queuing up to guest curate more such compilations, but the Radiohead man has set the bar sky-high in terms of the breadth and accessibility of his selections.
