Who and where you'll send demos?

How do you know if you have stuff that its worth the try?

Would you let listen to someone the stuff you are going to send? In my case, people here doesn't know shit about electronic music, so, would you attach here a track that you have in mind to send for feedback?

If anyone did, I'll appreciate if you attach tracks that you have sen to whatever the record it was.

Thanks.

Yeah, this should be in the EKT forum.

Also, you could send some tracks to a couple Netlabels and try to get an ep out or something. See what kind of reaction you get...

i wouldn't have seen this if it were in ekt.

the newer stuff i have i'm trying to get on a hard copy or digital release label.

but with my music, it's not too hard or abrasive enough to be on a sublight type label... and it's not ambient enough to be on a label that would do that.

i'm planning on starting my own with a friend.

you should do this. your music is good - but it definitely does suffer from being in a world/genre of it's own... it's hard to find a home sometimes, when you are doing something that's genuinely fresh and original. Keep looking for one though, in the meantime, as there is definite quality there.

Anyone who has heard your stuff would most likely agree.

Usually, if you're good or simply interesting enough, labels will find you. I've only released one thing semi-professionally and that was on a compilation (I was happy with that much). What ends up getting released may not even be what's popular, but what suits a particular individual's (working for the label) taste etc (This happened in my case). You will want to work on getting your music out there and heard. Post it everywhere. Myspace, ampcast, etc and joining with a web based company of like minded individuals or releasing your own releases are not bad ideas either. I personally like the idea of resorting to audio terrorism and mailing radom cassattes, cds, and thumbdrives to people.

If you do send demos- do not send entire albums!!! Only send 2-3 or your absolute BEST or MOST INTERESTING tracks. The first track should be the kicker and grab thier attention and follow it with something that compliments it. Also, interesting or creative packaging never hurts. It helped when I sent my demo for the compilation. I sent my demo in a Hello Kitty cd case and used those little colored alphabet stickers to label everything. It turned out the girl who was compiling the cd "LOVED" Hello Kitty, so you'll never know what works, but interesting packages will increase the likelyhood that your demo will get heard.

I've still never sent out a demo. I guess I don't care enough or maybe my music isn't up to par yet.

yes, i tend to cover a wide spectrum when i make music. some tracks are ambient, then there'll be some hip hop inspired electronic music, then some dancy tunes, then some experimental tunes... i'm pretty much all over the place, but that's what i like to do. i'm pretty much inspired by so much.

you're one of the few that have heard the release i'm trying to get out there. for me, that music i made is pretty personal and i don't want to subject it to free downloads. i haven't even posted any of the tracks in ylc because it's one of those releases i made that should be heard from beginning to end... kinda like telling a story.

that's why i started doing a colaboration project with a friend because i don't want to make any more "asymmetrical head" music for a while. once i find a proper label for the release i'm pushing (or get the label started with a friend) then i'll start making more "AH" musics.

really, use myspace.com. I haven't sent any syntheme demos out to labels, but within a few weeks of having a myspace page with a couple of tracks on, i was offered several deals. The myspace page works for you 24 hours a day, for no outlay. It's great. PS I don't work for myspace :)

it worked out in the beginning about 3 years ago... i got on a label that soon went away then came back with some other format... i got a lot of gigs that way too. some a&r company got a hold of me... i signed on, but that was a waste as they didn't really do anything for me at all.

i have to say from my own personal experience i totally disagree with this tip I've found that many label owners like getting full lp discs as demos. This shows them what the artist in question is capable of if the label decides to release an LP of them.

one other tip id like to add is dont feel the need to pretty yourself up and pretend to be a pro if you're not. If you're already sending out press packs and professional looking sendouts keep it up, but if you arent the type of person to do that sort of thing dont worry about it. I've found that some label owners like getting very personal packages directly addressed to them with handwritten notes. If its a mass sendout with a typed out impersonal letter i feel its more likely to be overlooked.

bs, not all labels are active enough to be continuously researching and scowering the scene for new talent. A good number of labels rely on demos for finding new artists.
