ahhhh, gather round children! it's time i told you all about the greenbank music system.

years ago, not long after starting to make music, i realised that giving all my tracks stupid names would result in a ridiculous mess. i thought about it for a while, considering starting at 1 and going up, or at least 0001 to make it work with the filesystems alphabetic sorting. i finally decided on using characters as it's at least a tiny bit easier to remember. the basic part of the system as it started then and remains today was to make each new track one letter of the alphabet on from the last, starting at aaaa and going up aaaa,aaab,aaac... etc.

now, because i work in a tracker the filesizes are generally small and realising that i would quite often make changes that i would not be able to undo in a track, the system then became to save every time as a different version. tracks start at (for example) aajk0p1 and progress aajk0p2, aajk0p3, etc. with the p standing for point (avoiding weirdness with fullstops in filenames). perhaps using 0001, 0002 etc. would be more logical but it feels better to me to have it reading like 1 point 5 or whatever and i don't think i've ever got to 9p9 (i think 10p1 would be filed before 1p0 so this would start to be a pain in the ass).

now, it gets a little more complicated here - subversions! sometimes i'll go off in a direction so different it needs to become a new track but i would generally want to know what it came from so rather than starting a whole new step (like a major change on aalr1p4 becoming aals0p1) i would add another letter to the end, starting with a. this keeps the name-sorted filename display in the right order and doesn't lead to ambiguous filenames. so in this way a major change to aakc2p5 where the original is to carry on as well will become aakca0p1. somtimes this gets comlicated as subversions of sub-versions will form, for example aagqabaabaaab2p8.it (these are all .it files until recently, now .mptm).

so - that's the system! a few points to note - even if i have a 'proper' name for my track i will retain the system name and just remember the proper one, even if knowing the name before starting, and yes i do sometimes break it - sometimes there will be a track that is so vastly different to its parent and it's going somewhere good rapidly that i will save it as the next free alphabet name down but place the old name in brackets afterwards. eg. aahn0p1(aahm4p5).

so there you have it! the long and boring tale of the greenbank filing system. oh, and to make this fully thread-relevant this means that my outtakes are all called things like aamd0p7, aake1p0 etc. etc. they usually have lower numbers as the really crap doesn't get worked on for long!

the majority of my track names are based on peoples names or nicknames, even though i usually change them when they are 'published' or whatever... but associating a person with it helps me to remember it. Petes Bass... Lauras Focus.. etc... when I've made any real change I save again with 'v1' then 'v2' 'v3' etc on the end of the filename, and when its finished i add 'FIN' to the end of the filename. Then convert it to mp3 and often rename it entirely, which is really confusing

I never name my tracks until they are entirely finished. Then they get dragged to a separate folder and named. As it is, I have a folder named for that month and inside that, a wav file folder with everything that's currently being worked on. Messy but somehow I find my way around it. Wav names aren't that important to me provided they give me some idea if it's a beat, drone, synth or voice or whatever. So typically I have drkwaeternoclick2, dx27187678, mesingchairnoise1, audijenifnohiss. If i'm not in a rush, things are sensibly named on occasion like Radiohiss or Beat 4. That doesn't happen often. Honestly though, it's a fucking nightmare to search and find them but perverse fun too.

these days tracks are numbered and given a name which helps me remember them. so starting at 0001_beat. after completing a track it gets a name but only really when its time for someone else to hear it (when uploading) or burning a cd or making artwork for an ep.

before i render the tracks i keep track of them by numbers, i have 1.flp through 825.flp kept in a folder in addition to 1.flp - 20.flp and 1.flp - 4.flp in separate folders (different side projects). I had an old folder with about 1 - 200 something but i've lost it in a hard drive crash. Before that I did about 20ish ones when i started out just using random names before I switched over to the number system that I've been using for years now. Most of these aren't very long. When I finish a track I then render it and give it a name. Sometimes I come up with name on the spot, sometimes I apply my titles.txt file on my desktop that I've been working on for about 6ish years. Sometimes I'm just thinking up track titles on the spot via random google searches and hitting the random button on wikipedia and riced out yugo but sometimes I still use titles.txt i just don't add to it. I have about 1838 titles, some used and some unused.

be warned, I thought up the majority of those horrid titles up when i was like 11 - 14 years old. also, i used some of them without marking them as *done* because i forgot to.

sometimes i come up with a name then build a track around it. it takes years sometimes... other times it talkes less than a month to a few days... like i have a track called "invisible pedestrian" that i've probably been working on for like 4 years... went through some transformations... but i kept the main sample that i made in the beginning... it will be on another album soon i guess... that album will be called "the treehouse symposium". i'm working on about 4 tracks for that now... but it probably won't be out till around 2009 or something... especially the way i've been making music lately.
