A serious thread

Okay I know it's a bit much to ask on this forum these days ........ but how about a serious thread on BoC's music analysing their musical structure to see what those incredible melodies we all love are made off & how the sounds they use contribute to this structure. It would make a refreshing change to the usual 'I've got an old undiscovered BoC track down my knickers' & 'I have it on good authority a new album is due' bullshit! How about it?

There is nothing serious about BoC.

The tones are generated via pulse controlled leaks from here:

Okay. I wanted to talk about the music theory behind BoC's melodies. What scales & musical structures do they use to give their music it's unique feel. How much do the sounds they use contribute towards this?

Detune + Tape Saturation + 70's Analog = BoC and 17.5 million internet users in their bedroom studios with a copy of CS-80v.

That takes care of the sounds. But what about the music structure? Scales & chords etc.

Not really sure I only own MHTRTC

There are plenty of examples on that album. But their melodies have some sort of constant right through their entire catalogue of material. There's a definitely well defined structure in BoC's material that goes deeper than just the sounds they use.

Yah I know it's called only having one idea.

I don't know enough theory/am not good enough with the ear to tell you a key signature off the top of my head, but really the sound has more to do with that feel than the key. Lots of intentional osc drift and detuning going on there which is what gives it that "out of focus" "being played alongside a 1973 documentary film about tributaries of the Mississippi River" type feel.

It was a worthy attempt.

That, I admit, was destined for certain failure from the off

Hi ,

this is really poor, Dogboy was asking for some serious statements, all he received was childish crap. If you guys no nothing about making music...just shut up...! If you know...contribute...!

Ok, for a start...look at this:

There have been some articles about this theme on twosim, unfortunatly this site is down at the moment. If it's online again, find your way there. Content wise it's more interesting anyway...

It is interesting how BOC's harmonies have gotten more complex over time--fewer triads, wider chord spans, more pitches in each chord, etc.

The newer material certainly sounds more complex than the older stuff. There's more going on. But is it more going on musicaly or are there just more sounds & elements in each track? From what your saying their actual music has become more complex. Can you eloborate on what you are saying? It's interesting that for a lot of people MHTRTC is some of BoC's best material to date. Is this because it is less complex musically or more stripped down ......... or both?
