Modding your synths

I could have sworn I made another thread about this - but can't find it, so here we are.

I have a Paia Fatman. I had enourmous fun building it - but stock, it has plenty of room for improvement. There are OODLES (yes, oodles) of mods on the web for the Fatman. A good repository can be found here:

http://home1.gte.net/res0658s/fatman/

To start with, I substituted my own super-bright LEDs for the ones Paia provided. Very soon after I built it, I went back and did the following mods:

- Knob mods (inc. resmax switch)

- Lee Diode Mod

- Gravenhorst VCF Input

- Separate level controls for VCOs (plus one for the VCF input)

I was happy with that for a bit, and at school without most of my tools/parts. However, I'm back home now, with some free time, and I just completed the following additional mods:

- AS/ASR -> AS/ASR/LFO mod

- John Sepulveda's Multimode VCF Mod

- Gravenhorst Hard Sync mod

It's starting to get pretty tricked out, and my addiction to dicking around with it should only get worse from here... I actually did the LFO mod, put it back in my rack... only to take it out again a few hours later to do the other two.

And now, of course... pics:

That looks sweet, i modded my poly 800, but thats about as far as i have got. I thought i had busted it when i couldnt quite finish it properly. After sending it away to a service place, and getting it back way later i realized that maybe i just had the resonance and cutoff right up, and erm, it wasnt busted, maybe, considering the mod was res and cut control. Who knows, it fuckin squeels now tho, i had my neighbours literally standing on thier deck yelling shit at me when i was tweaking it.

ya, one of the "knob mods" i mentioned was a switch that cuts resonance wide open, far more than you could stock (though the knob still has an effect).

great for icing on the cake - go cruising along then flip open the resonance to squeal it out

edit: and i'll get samples up eventually, moving again and all my things are packed

I'd love to build a Fatman but do not have any electronics experience aside from soldering a cable fifteen years ago. Maybe I should start with doing a Poly-800 mod? What do you recommend to get started? I've also got a partly wrecked Yamaha CS-01 I'd like to mod.

get some practice soldering on something non-important.

then order the fatman.

it's a lovely kit - great, clear directions, well thought-out. if you do get stuck, you can call up paia and they'll help you out.

but mine worked on the first try - quite gratifying!
