a question about the price of a virus TI

Recommended Posts

Ive been trying to figure this out...

the Virus TI desktop is about $1800

the full keyboard version, and the polar version, are about $2600 or so

How does this work?

First... how is it the same price, to have a 3 octave synth, and a 5 octave synth? there is nothing different, except the color and the # of keys... so why the same price? Youd think the polar would be cheaper....

secondly... why is the difference so great between the desktop and the keyboards? If you compare the polar to the desktop, the only things you are getting extra, are a 3 octave keyboard, and a pitch bend and mod wheel. is that really worth 800 dollars?

I really just dont understand that..... any insights?

hmmm

craziness...

unless you had no keyboard, I dont see why someone wouldnt get the desktop. and even then, you can get a control with aftertouch and more for less then the difference...

Must be a really nice keyboard, haha.

Are you going to buy one? I've been back and forth on getting one for years...

I dont know... no time soon, thats for sure. I just bought Nord Modular G2 and I love it to death. The biggest things about the virus, for me, is more patches can be played at once, and its fixed architecture, so its fast to quickly make sounds. If I had lots of money, sure I'd get one... but I dont... I think if I do come into some more money, I might just get another modular G2, but the rack version. Itd be awesome to have like 4-5 nords :-D overkill, yes, but awesome, yes.

Anyways... the major thing that bugs me about virus, is a lot of the functions are done by hitting an edit button, or shift+a knob. Also, I am deeply in love with LED endless encoders on the nord. After using that, going to a synth whose knobs do not update when you load a new patch etc... not diggin that

mostly the virus sounds amazing, and is easy and fast. and it has some features that the nord doesnt have, like wave table and stuff.. it has its own unique sound, which I like... but if I had to choose, I like the nord sound better... its just that sometimes I want that virus sound

Im working on making a patch on the nord that functions like a full fledged fix architecture synth, and then Ill assign all the functions to the LED knobs, and save variations I make in a sub folder... just gets a bit tricky trying to make a "go-to" synth that has all the standard functions you may need...

The Virus TI was a lot less when it came out as well. I believe it was around $2,399. Then they sold out within a month and the users had lots of problems with it.

The Polar is so attractive because it seems to be the new thing to have this small 37 key keyboards, because they are easier to transport to live gigs and fit well in studios too.

The keyboards themselves are infact supposed to be very high quality and semi weighted. If you read reviews people do find them to be close to perfection (with the exceptions of those who perfer fully weighted keys of course).

The Virus screen is kinda a pain and yeah it is annoying to have to go thru edit pages to access (no pun intended) specific functionality, but you can't forget that the way the Virus TI works is you can plug it into a USB port and it opens as a VST within your host where all the functionality is there easy to edit on a few tabs.

I do infact like the raw surging aggressive sounds the Virus are capable of, however me personally, i'm waiting for the next iteration when hopefully they have worked out a lot of the bugs and most importantly transfer data at USB 2.0 speeds.
