richie d. james album

Recommended Posts

"drill and bass" was effectively spawned from richard james' attempts to recreate jungle music with fiddly anal stepsequenced drum samples as opposed to the retriggering of classic breaks such as the "think" & "amen" breaks

while jungle producers were sequencing whole loops , richard james, influenced by the tempo and ferocity of jungles most complex rhythms and particularly luke viberts plug releases, was intricately programming beats from scratch

this was essentially the birth of what has come to be known as drill n bass

There's also "Flutter" by AE from the Anti EP from '94, that's the earliest high-tempo, consciously non-rhythmically-repeating dance track I can think of. Don't know if I'd call it drill though.

Sure it's good but drill? naw.

EDIT: And most good drill is VERY rhythmic. Maybe it doesn't repeat (if its great) but rhythmic non the less.

This may be true, but check out this track from 94, the year before plug, spotlight, hab and all that stuff came out.

I'm not sure I had a point as such - what were you expecting? - except to say that there were other people working on an experimental jungle sound besides RDJ and Vibert at the time. Track is by Boymerang btw, I forgot to mention that.

If he ever manages to get his Juice Box reissues sorted, that would make my year.
