ive recently gotten 5 tracks from soulseek that is supposedly the early

boards of canada album, 'hooper bay', originally a cassette. however

upon listening, i was still not convinced it was the real thing. so i

went to http://www.discogs.com/artists/boards+of+canada

and found that the track lengths of the songs that i downloaded are

almost exactly the same as the ones listed on the orginal cassette. but

these songs do not sound like 1994 boards of canada. then again, i

doubt i would really even know.. still yet, the songs arent even the same as the

snippets that are all over slsk which are apparently from the old boc website.

if anyone wants this let me know, my soulseek name is 'freak8492' no

quotes. i could probably also post it here somewhere maybe or even

through email so you could hear it, i could really use the help. this

has been bugging me for a while now haha!

The only "hooper bay" songs I have heard are fake, and are actually the music from the excellent BBC spoof science program "Look Around You".

They are as follows...

Circle 1:34

Geiser 1:37

Noatak 3:01

Point Hope 1:31

Seward Leaf 1:06

They're still great though

Ahh, I knew they were fake but didn't realize they were from Look Around You. There is a real clip of Circle on Soulseek (length 0:35) which came from the original BoC website.
Hmmm...I must track that down. What was the old boc site like???

on side note, I don't think there are many things around as BOC-ish as Look around you. I've only seen the series with the science modules (calcium, iron, etc) and it has the same soothing effect as listening to some early boc.

the old site is no longer in existence (the pre-twoism clips were on their website circa 1998) ... you can find them on slsk though

finding that album is nearly impossible

i once downloaded it, and all i got were a buncha Mum songs that were hacked up so the song lengths would match the supposed ones off of Hooper Bay.

makes me sad :zorro:

Until either somebody M&M confided in breaks their silence or BoC themselves decide to release these tracks, I doubt we'll ever hear these songs.

it was my understanding at the time that Look Around You was first out that BoC did the music. It's credited to Gelg (which is meaningless to me) but there's a brief add at the very end of the special features for "Meet the Hexagons" which is highly suggestive. I remember there being something on the warp site that implied that BoC=Gelg but i couldn't find it in their archives. maybe i'm mis-remembering. Anyhow the music to the series (not to mention the series itself) it awesome and highly recommended.

First post, sorry if this has been discussed.

INTERVIEW: Robert Popper

The duo also referred to material from other media: 'Photography books - people like Luc Delahaye. Short-wave radio - I used to listen to a lot as a kid, so did Pete. We loved the vaguely dictatorial tone of stations like Radio Moscow, and all the music used. All very heraldic and bombastic. That influenced us when we did the music certainly, and we listened to lots of Boards of Canada, Benge and Warp artists. Stuff like that.' The strikingly authentic music is credited to Gelg: in fact the group comprises Popper and Serafinowicz again, who wrote and played everything you hear.

that settles it then. frankly, i'm more impressed by the creators of that show now than i was thinking they'd convinced BoC to do the soundtrack.

we won't hear this shit until they are old men and fall out after the one going out with the mad japanese conceptual artist chick loses the plot and goes to live in manhattan, lying in bed all day and writing piano sonatas.

then he gets shot by some crazed fan.*

That's probably what BoC reckon. But there's still the promise of this elusive box-set...

That's what I'm afraid of - Mike and Marcus find their early sound too crude, when in reality it has a unique charm, with moments of unforced and unfiltered brilliance.

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

And then, foie gras is banned from NY state, because it's considered as ill-treat. IT'S NOT. KFC is tourist ill-treat. YOU POISONERS! Two hours after being to KFC, i stopped in a amsih little town barf all that KFC shit out. Nice work!

So i hope this woman is not like kfc chicken, otherwise she'll be pulled to pieces.

Disagree. I find the one without track names (always forget which is which) to fit your description somewhat. But the other two, especially the one with forest moon and sequoia, to be excellent, better than maxima in fact. And I think they capture that wide-open/junior-high-school and high-school nostalgia better than TCH. They went back to childhood with MHTRTC and Geogaddi, with all the kid samples, but the old tunes songs, though chronologically earlier, seem to capture a later phase of life. I feel if you could bottle the essence of what it was like for the Sandison brothers growing up in Canada, it would be the Old Tunes tracks. They seem to capture a specific "memory-flavor" more vividly than anything that came after. I think on MHTRTC BoC developed a more general vision that many people could relate to, but I think the Old Tunes songs contain more meaning specific to the Sandisons. They seem more personal.

I can only partially relate to the mental images I get from the tracks, since my youth was I think more urban than the Sandison's. But I like the "woodsy" (as opposed to pastoral) feel, the images stirred by tracks like"bmx track", "buckie high", "powerline misfortune," the cheeky political satire, and most of all the playfulness. Though I still like BoC, I feel they've gotten a bit too serious, and less inspired, which seems to be the fate of people as they age and get famous.
