b born droid
mic technique & placing >>>> fancy/shitty gear. Read all the tips about placing etc etc, then try them out. You will notice the difference. Failing that, record some stuff, post it up here and describe what you want to sound better and maybe I/we could give some feedback. Guest welcome to the machine
b born droid said: mic technique & placing >>>> fancy/shitty gear. thats all there is to it! :) play around with things, a bad room can be hard to notice with good micing. the closer the micing the less room sound generally, but the less 'real' it sounds. your biggest problem is overheads on drums, and ambient mics, as these will pick up the room sound allot. try to set your overheads so they are focusing toward the drums as much as possible, change the mics patterns so that they record a more focused area and make sure you are just getting the stuff you want to record in that area etc. an ambient mic is not generally needed, but it can add some life to the sound. sometimes even a room that sounds bad for the main mics can be ok on the ambients, it adds a bit of 'togetherness' to the sound, even at very low volumes. you may have to move the ambient mic track a bit in your daw so that its not to delayed. with drums, if its the sound you are going for, a small unbalanced room sound can sound ok, but only if you get enough controll in the close mics to get the main sounds you want out of them.
