Bass help

My bass sounds muddy. What's the idiots guide to make a bass more punchy.

First, run it through a gate with the threshold set at a level that cuts off line noise and long decay.

Then, EQ in a curve between 100-800 hz or so.

Add some nice, crunchy distortion...perhaps a low-sweep phaser.

Prepare ass for shaking, and proceed to play bass.

This'll usually create some nice, lush low tones on even the shittiest of basses.
