Djing with ipods/mp3 players or cds

Recommended Posts

Been thinking recently that I'm not too keen on lumping around a laptop anymore. One because of the weight and secondly and more importantly because of the cost of it and the risk of getting it stolen in a club. I know someone recently who had his knicked and it got me to thinking that I don't know if its wise carrying £600 worth of equipment around in a dark club these days. Am I only the one that thinks for all the great benefits that come from Ableton live and using a laptop that actually just having a few cds in a bag seems like far less hassle than lumping an expensive laptop to one location or another?

Anyways my point was that perhaps ipod/mp3/cdj players are the way forward even though they're going backwards because essentially you can't get insurance on a laptop to cover theft and even then it'll cost £60 to insure a laptop.

Clubs need these installed. Of course unless there is the demand then they won't take off.

Might consider getting the one below at some time in the future as its only £94.

EDIT: Actually the one above is a bit shit as it has no pitch adjustment so almost worthless in its own right.

i'm pretty sure venetian snares uses these..... 300 bucks. i don't know how great they work..... probably not ace/ he uses his own music with them/ that's his advantage

why not a small laptop with traktor. it rips everything else to shreds.

I am using CD turntables and I gotta say this stuff is really expensive and heavy for carrying. But on the other hand it is very fun and easy for use.

i went to a show the other night where the band played their percussion through an ipod, pretty lame... DJing with them i guess could be cool

EDIT:: typo

join the musicians union for £9.99 a month and you're covered for everything insurance wise.

surprising the amount of guys out there playing gigs who don't even know about the cover they can give you.

of course you can get insurance on a laptop to cover theft.

i have all of my musical gear insured specifically.

covers theft, damage etc, including in a locked vehicle parked outside a venue.

or you could join the MU... they automatically give you insurance for single un-named items up to the value of a grand... (fifty quid excess). but i see mo has already mentioned that...

additionally, if you're a member of the MU, you get preferential rates on further specific insurance cover. i pay 33 quid a year and have over five grands worth of kit insured.

cd's are hot at the moment if yer not using a laptop, drum and bass dj's are all about using cd's because if their homey makes a phat track he can just send them a 320 and he can just burn it to cd

lol cd's

retarded.

why not just be a man and bring vinyl?

and cd's can't be stolen?

anytime you bring your nice shit out into the world it can get stolen. i can see dj'ing with vinyl and i can see dj'ing with a laptop but dj'ing with cd's in this day and age just seems retarded. about the only advantage i see is cdj decks being more stable than a laptop.
