Midi Dump

Recommended Posts

Can anyone advise me regarding midi data dump? If I understand correctly, one can dump midi data into a software program to store info- tracks, settings, sounds, etc that could then be restored to a synth or other device via midi.

If that is the case, what would I need to make my synth talk to my computer, what program would I need, etc. I presume there's something out there like a midi to usb hub or the equivalent. The hunt for smartmedia cards is getting a bit bleak. Truly, I wish these Korg would use something more common like the average camera memory card and whatnot...

Would there be any inherent advantage to using smartmedia over some other means? :undecided:

Emagic used to do a librarian thing.

most sequencers these days store all that shit when you save and recall then you load them up.

not really sure wat you're after to be honest.

I use a midi dump from elektron to store patterns/songs/kits from my machinedrum and monomachine, it works great. Saves my parameter locks, patters, everything. I am not sure if it works with non-elektron gear though. But you can certainly try, it is available free from elektron.se. You just need a midi interface.

Guest welcome to the machine

for basic synth-data-to-longterm-storage, ie not wanting to put it into a vsti or anything fiddly, i just use cubase.

set record on a midi track, press record and then press dump on your synth, and it'll all be recorded in. you can go into the list editor and make sure its there.

then when you want to send back I just need to press read sysex on my synth (which is a korg ms2000 but i assume most others are the same) and playback the midi track. you can save the file as a midi file of course to have it somewhere else on your computer.

you may have to change the settings in file>preferences>midi filter.

in the version of sx i have you need to make sure the sysex checkbox for thru is 'checked' which stops the data being retransmitted out of the midi out cable back into your synth (if its wired that way) which will cause problems. just make sure the sysex checkbox for record is left unticked, ie not being filtered out.

what synth are you talkin about?

midi-ox can do everything, but maybe there are even applications written specifically for your machine.

oh, and you'll need to connect the synth to your computer via midi. no doubt about that. you can get an usb midi port, but i'd recommend getting a pci soundcard with a "game port" midi port. it's supposed to be much more smooth, although i can't say i've ever experienced smooth midi on a pc. not after ~1995.

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies!

School just started (OH MY HELLZ) so I haven't had a chance to look into these ideas properly yet... I'll see if I can come back tonight...

In answer to a couple of questions, I'm using an Elecribe EMX-1, and the purpose of the dump is to have more storage. I'm filling up fast because I use it for multiple projects, plus I want to be able to restore some of the built-in stuff for further study. I expect I'll want plenty of storage in future, and these smartmedia cards are hard to get and a bit of a pain in the ass as well...

Cheers all, I'll be back.
