SPEAR Additive Resynthsizer

Basically, it uses a method I don't fully understand the particulars of , but one that utilizes Fast Foruier Transforms to analyze the partials contained within an input sound, and recreate it using stacks of sine waves (that second part there is what additive synthesis is).

I'm at work so I can't hear it yet, but I'd imagine this would make some pretty fucking crazed adaptations of your voice, or a guitar, or farting or whatever. Shit I wish I had a violin.

hmmm. just downloaded this, but because of the late hour, im not going to try to really delve into it until tomorrow. i opened it, and i'm not sure how to use it at all yet, and the fuck-tard don't include any example files.....

d/l ing.

incidentally, just recently started using a bit of s/w called celemony melodyne.

analyses the melody of a wav file, then you can change the melody beyond recognition in a completely user defineable way without affecting the tempo, or vice versa.

good shit.

is it free? if so, where did ya nab it?

played with SPEAR a little

very strange being able to select all the little waves and frequency shift, transpose, select their harmonics, all individually. you can zoom in on each sine wave and adjust all the points to do some autistic tuning. really neat

though i don't know how i would use it yet, i'm sure one day i'll be like "man, i wish i could.. blah, blah, blah, but that's impossible... oh yeah, SPEAR could do that!"

Melodyne is not free, but it is a fantastic bit of software...got a chance to play around with it at a friend's place last year.

i have a violin which im currently relearning... ill post some tests soon...

I also had meant to add, theoretically, additive synthesis can accurate reproduce any sound, you just need to have enough sine waves stacked together at the right amplitudes. The reason additive synthesizers don't get that far is that they aren't powerful enough to render all of those sine's in realtime, but this could probably get it done, at least much more closely. But then that's no fun, so the nudging of the various partials is what makes this sound really appealing.
