recording problem

i was trying to record in audacity and couldn't get it to work

first i pressed record in audacity

then i pressed play on the media i'm trying to record

but no waveforms appeared in audacity

i even downloaded reaper to try in there but still no go

i can haz halp?

Check your recording source:

Control panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Advanced > Options > Properties > Recording > OK! > Select "wave" or "what you hear" or "stereo mix" - it'll be named something like that.

Adjust your levels to make sure there's no peaking then gogogogo

or just type in start/run: sndvol32 /r and select stereo mixer.

That really is simpler, I've been doing the control panel way for ages.

tnt - if you're using an ASIO soundcard it wont work.

what kind of soundcard do i need?

got the right source record setting on audacity? theres a drop-down list in the top right, fuck around with that for a while - wave-out, mic, line-in, whatever youre recording from

If it's not the recording source (or their levels) it's probably a soundcard issue from what Mosca said. I've never encountered Audacity actually not working on any soundcards but I haven't used it on too many machines.

yeah it totally depends on your soundcard, theres probably a third party app that does this for you too
