recording problem

Check your recording source:

 

Control panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Advanced > Options > Properties > Recording > OK! > Select "wave" or "what you hear" or "stereo mix" - it'll be named something like that.

 

Adjust your levels to make sure there's no peaking then gogogogo

That really is simpler, I've been doing the control panel way for ages.

If it's not the recording source (or their levels) it's probably a soundcard issue from what Mosca said. I've never encountered Audacity actually not working on any soundcards but I haven't used it on too many machines.
