what was wrong with the old artwork? first pressing sold out? how many did they press (first pressing and repressing)?

artwork was utter shit. i designed it. needed a professional job, so some folk at a design agency i know did us some good work. the 2 single covers and the new album cover have a common theme. this will the sort of approach taken with all forthcoming Herb releases (Engine7 next).

first pressing didn't sell out but we sold plenty enough, paid for the pressing. pressed 1000 of the repress.

be nice and go buy a copy next week.

Hmm yeah, this cover is well nice. It reminds me of the art on the Rune Grammofon relases.

EDIT: I'm guessing FE is Forced Exposure (or possibly Frightening Elizabeth)

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

All the tracks are decent enough fare

they usually only say good thing, so "decent fare" is definetely a bad comment from them.

hope they say nicer things about carnivalesque.

and you know i preferred the old artwork. ink blots? really?

yeah. boomkats don't like us i don't think. not enough dubstep for their liking. getting them to carry it was probably hard work alone.

and each to their own on the artwork, i'm glad someone actually liked it. our distro folk laughed at it, and sort of pushed us to spend $$$ on professional stuff.

hey ho. it's a corporate old world. full of wank.

Scottish duo Mark Flanagan and Gordon MacDermid draw influence from classic electronica sources: elements of Depeche Mode, Eno, Boards Of Canada and Aphex Twin all crop up over the course of Carnivalesque, in fact, the detuned synths on opener 'Vertical Hold' bring to mind the strained melodies that occupied the more frenetic moments on Drukqs, but the beats come from a more modern source, plucked straight from the House Of Schnauss, ratcheting up the compression on the snare to the point of overexcitement, and just generally going all out for some blissed-out electronic beatscapes. Whatever that means. 'Breaking Into Smile', previously a single, serves a similar function, layering brisk breakbeat patterns over pulsating synth patterns with a strong emphasis on pop hooks. At the other end of the scale, 'Winter Broth' is a gloopy sonic potage featuring some synths nicked straight from Vangelis' sound library, threatening to launch into 'Chariots Of Fire' at any moment. ...

cant tell if they like it or not.

we got a cracking review for the album from legendary rock/electro journalist Kris Needs (www.myspace.com/krisneeds) for Update Magazine.

Glasgow duo Mark Flanagan and Gordon MacDermid produce a sound unlike any other around at the moment but recalling any number of great music from the past. It could be called chillout music with its floating textures, pastoral melodies and shimmering grooves, but that would be doing it an injustice. Anything from the 70s ambient explorations of Bryan Eno and Robert Fripp to early Future Sound Of London can be heard echoing around tracks like 'Vertical Hold' and 'Breaking Into Smile' but, again, the sound is all their own. The key is the amount of emotion they pour into their music. This gorgeous soul results in something that can only be described as beautiful, which you can't say much these days.

5 out of 5

Kris Needs.
