Reel-to-Reel help needed

Recommended Posts

Guest dugbert

so I got this machine the other day, everything works, but I don't know the correct way to route the tape through all these wheels.

If someone knows how to set this up, they should download this picture and throw down some lines in mspaint to show me where the tape goes. i color coded the wheels so i can talk about them and so you can see them more clearly.

the blue one always spins at the speed the machine is set to, whether the reels are moving or not.

the pink one has a free-spinning black rubber wheel around it, and can be pushed toward the blue one.

the orange one clicks into the left position like it is shown in the picture. when it is engaged like this the reels are functional

if any of this is confusing, i would love to clarify it for you. I'd really like to get this thing working

hmm that one looks more complicated than mine. I just thread the tape underneath the heads and to the other reel and I'm done. does that panel that looks like the tape goes through lift up or anything?

no the panel part is pretty straightforward, it just goes underneath

damn dude!

ahahahaha

+

i'm just really stoked that it's bearded rather than lipped

it seems like i've got the tape worked out

the record button does nothing when i press it

and there is no 'play' button, so i assume there should be audio output whenever the reels are moving and i'm not recording

i think i just have to buy the manual

ebay, or $16 for a fucking pdf file,, tough call

and someone better sell me some cards for my ddd-1, it's lonely

not sure if you'd still be having trouble with this a couple weeks later,

but things you might want to try, the fwd button might be for play, with a different (or no) button for fast forward.

if record doesn't work, try holding down the button and pressing play, the record button should stay down and recording should commence... if that doesn't work, it's possible the reel-to-reel is damaged and it's function is only impaired while recording.

also, you could probably flip up or remove the big akai gx panel covering the tape heads. during playback the tape should be touching the heads. also, there may be a small wire under there, on the left hand side where the tape comes in, a small wire that is spring loaded and attempts to move forward, that should catch on the tape, if it doesn't it might interrupt playback.

i've got a couple reels, but not this specific one.

good luck with getting it working, they're great fun.
