Help me get a break rolling

Recommended Posts

I've been stuffing around with drums for years and I have learnt so many things about the practical side of drums. by the practical side I mean the purposes for each drum element. I make my beats from scratch (sometimes not entirely from scratch)

I like to make breakbeats and I have got the basic fundamentals of the "ka-chika" sound down -hehe, that sounds so stupid :teeth:

I am now at the stage where I want to be making nice breaks i.e rolling breaks.

As many of you probably know, the only way to get a break rolling is to have something flowing/continous in it. I have however, had no experience with implementing long cymbals into beats. I've stuffed around with a few ride cymbals before but no matter what I did with them they sounded shit.

anyways, here is the latest break that I have created:

http://download.yousendit.com/7D3B958A768C70B4

...it's a low quality sample.

Can somebody please either:

-explain to me which type of cymbals to use/how to use them

or

-work on it themself, re-upload it and then explain which type of cymbals were used, etc... so that I can do the same thing to the HQ version.

I don't normally cry for help with beats but when it comes to giving something a rolling sound, I have listened to countless tracks and studied the beats but still haven't been able to figure it out.

I enjoy the fragility of the rolling lol tbh. The broken lol is like our own mortality staring us in the face, reminding us to enjoy that sunset.

i couldn't listen to your mp3 cause the link is broke, but im guessing you probably just need more practice with sequencing, editing your drum sounds, an getting the right drums in the first place. there's no secret trick, well there are tricks, but not a button that makes rolling breaks

I didnt mean to sound like a total noob, i'm just not very good at explaining things.

I know that there is no "button" to make it roll but when you have something constant in the background, THAT is what makes it roll.

anyways, I have uploaded it here:

One of the best examples of a rolling break is obviously the amen. A friend once told me that a good way to get a rolling break was to open up the amen break in an audio editor and add your own drum sounds in the same sequence as the amen just to get the rolling down. Then you can change up the break how you see fit.

Yeah the amen has constant noise in the background too. I'd love to know how the amen break was made in the first place though. :undecided:

It was made by drummer G.C. Coleman from funk/soul group The Winstons in 1969. The break was sampled from a drum solo in the middle of the song "Amen, Brother".

It was not computer made. Squarepusher has said that being a drummer helped him with his drum programming greatly.
