Southland Tales.......

Recommended Posts

What the fuck is this film?

is it just bad film?

or is it a truly concise criticism of American "culture" put on film?

I just vomited a little in my mouth.....

I thought about the fact that the Rock was the best part about the film........

I am scared.........

I want answers, not just the fact that you hated it or loved it..........!

I feel mentally and physically raped after having sat through it....

I, I, I, I, I

don't know!

and I liked Moby's score!

AHHHHHH!

it's not any more incoherent than a Lynch film.....

I was just not expecting to see a Lynch/Gilliam style film......

and the sfx were not so good.....

bad cgi work...

but the story is intriguing enough to make you question it for days (whether or not I loved it or hated it) after having seen it...

and a lot of the cinematography is very cool...

so someone else see this so I can get a conversation rollin'!

i had pretty high hopes (dargis gave it a great review), but alas, i can't say that i liked it. certain moments were brilliant; and i can see the sort of sprawling epic that he was going for, but there were too many bad casting decisions, and then sloppy editing, etc.

yeah after watching it a second time and pondering the ending, it's my favorite movie of the year.

about to read the Salon article.. but before I do, I want to give my original take on it:

almost walked away from the screen about a dozen times in the first hour... I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Really, really, really bummed by the facile equating of rebels=marxism=counterculture=tattoos/dreads/dyed hair.

The visual references to comic books (the sniper is so totally DMZ and Cheri Oteri's baton is obviously homage to Y:the last man) made me think Dickie Kelly is just a comic book nerd who thought his idea for a sprawling epic sci-fi comic could be translated into a movie...

But I stuck it out and actually enjoyed the last 45 minutes or so. I got the feeling that this whole thing is a long joke making fun of American movies and the kind of bullshit they commonly expect people to swallow. I mean, it still reeks of unrefined-aspiring-comics-writer fumes, but the sheer insane amount of visual references (hey! that's from a Lynch movie! hey! that's from Tarantino! hey! that's from Coen brothers! hey! that's from Repo man! etc...) makes me think it's supposed to be satire. It just veers a little too close to MAD TV when it should have maybe stuck closer to Mad Magazine's other, far greater heir: Watchmen.

Donnie Darko was enough. I don't need to see anymore films by this dude.

Really?

I love Donnie Darko. I'm curious to see Southland Tales, even if it is a bit of a car crash.

The box definitely looks like a more coherent, better film....Richard Matheson when done right, I am legend excluded, can be nice sci fi fantasy mind candy....the Twilight Zone for fuck's sake....yay!

This was on cable the other night, and I had never heard of it, despite being a donnie darko fil. in fact, I didn't even know it was a robert kelly film till the end credits, which made an interesting afterthought. At any rate, i thought this was "quite good", although i would be interested in seeing the cannes version, which is 25-30 min longer. I'd like to read the prequel graphic novels as well. Sorry for bringing up this old topic, but at least i didn't start a new one right?

I don't see why anyone would make The Box into a movie? Unless they've changed the ending the ending won't come as a big surprise, and I bet a LOT of people have read The Box.

I've grown to love his film after many watchings....

the strangest cast ever, like the most fucked up snl movie ever and makes for deep conversation....

and a great story, def for PKD fans.....

nd I don't think I have ever seen anything like it before it....

which is hard to do...

I thought 'the Box' is an original Richard Kelly screenplay??
