Guest bontempi
how can a mic with such a shitty sound and frequency response is the "industry standard" ? http://www.proaudioeurope.com/assets/image...sm57-freq_4.gif listen to a comparison here (made by steve albini) : http://www.royerlabs.com/democd/democd_tr20-24.html which mic do you own ? i have a beyer m201 for my snare, a D112 for my kick (everything sounds the same with it but for its price it's ok), a cheap chinese ribbon mic which sounds great on guitar amp ( Your browser does not support the HTML5 audio tag check this out - ribbon is overstressed though :) ), and i'm getting a beyer M260 as soon as i can, its freq response is damn sexy i'd love to have a good condenser mic but there doesn't seem to be any good one under 400 euros. all these Rode / Studio Project / MXL stuff is just chinese crap, they all sound the same : super agressive highs, unnatural sound, impossible to mix the oktava MK-319 is quite surprising but doesn't fit my voice and is really a vocal mic. doesn't sound good on anything else. awepittance
my favorite microphone is the neumann tlm-103, made for doing vocals and bassy as hell but great for field recordings if you can get a big enough wind screen. I did a lot of my elemental album using two of these. granty
my sm58 is like an abused child - i volley it around the room, but i love it really. ten fingers ten toes
I love my SM57. It does a pretty cool pickup for a plate reverb, I can beat people to death with it, and blow it up and it'll still sound great. I'm not looking to record this years Grammy Award winning "OOo babeh girl you SOO sexy!" R&B smash so I guess I don't notice any of it's shortcomings. Guest Aces
I have three shure Beta 58a's which sound really good for dynamic mics. I also have some shitty samson drum mics of whihc i only use the condensers which are good enough for what i use them for. I am not an audiophile about these things i believe in using things and making them work. That and i don't have the money to spend on other mics. Guest A/D
schoeps cmc641 or cmc64 is the closest thing i have to an all-purpose mic. i would like a stereo pair. kcinsu, those 184s/185s sound great. stereo pairs show up on ebay every once in a while but they are indeed not cheap. bontempi, i'm absolutely sure you listen to music that's been recorded with an sm57. they are great mics when used well. all microphones are an 'effect' for one reason or another, and the 57 is no different. I used them to record all the recorded sounds in pyractomena borealis. im not a mic expert, but I think id be pretty set with just those mics, at least for my purposes. Guest we_kill_soapscum
ten fingers ten toes said: I love my SM57. It does a pretty cool pickup for a plate reverb, i agree here. good cheap aggressive upper mid dub punch. but sucks for lows unless you are right up on the source, and then it tips up. itd be so nice to have a solid X00 dollar condenser, but sm 57s and 58s are very good 'make do' microphones in any situation, so i never think about investing in anything else. Guest Halfmanhalfrobot
I use 2 akg c414 mics for studio stuff. they are not cheap but they are really good quality. if people want a cheapy mic get yoself an audio technica at 2020 they are great value for money!
