TYCHO

The Daydream / The Disconnect

GIDG-10 | digital | December 11, 2007

Tycho, the musical alias of San Francisco based artist and producer Scott Hansen, offers up the first of three singles, The Daydream/The Disconnect, that will precede a forthcoming and long-anticipated full-length release. Known in the design world as ISO50, Hansen's bucolic, sun-drenched design style serves as a backdrop for the music which so closely echoes his visual sentiments. As Tycho, Hansen blends swirling melodies into vaguely triumphant arcs that crisscross between stuttering beats and vocal samples, creating rolling sonic landscapes that extend off into the horizon.

In The Daydream Tycho summons up an experience that is both pensive and familiar, in much the same way the sun might fade in and out through the office blinds during mid-afternoon. He chooses melody tones that are decisively off-center so as to ask for reflection, pulling attention not towards the music as an object to behold, but through it like a lens, just for watching the minutes turn. It's a gentle drift away from the grind that floats along empathetic lifelines with a prismatic track of drums and guitar laid beneath a golden security blanket that no one wants to dim.

The Disconnect differs subtly in its ability to transfix, if only from hypnosis to haze. It peddles on in a more mysterious tone of voice with a steady peck and thump groove, lightened up with angelic voices amidst flurries of harp-like synths. An actual sense of breathing permeates the texture, while delicate sheathes of ice sprinkle in gusts over the oil-like bends of near horizontal beams.

2. the art is a rip off of boom bip / questionmark artwork. although i'm sure many people have used what appears to be a coffee mug stain before.

You really think so? do you listen to alot of BoC? i think if you really knew some BoC than this isn't even close almost wished you listened to some BoC albums like Geogaddi and BoC Maxima or even MHTRTC, sounds more like Royksopp instrumentals or Ulrich or a fuller Boom Bip than BoC and its not even close to Royksopp w/ vocals though. BoC is ALOT darker and they would never go to a point of epic and happy like Tycho does in these tracks but you should check Boards of Canada out sometime, let me know i'll even maybe jump on aim and send you a few tracks, PM me i dont mind

I think both tracks are nice, wether they're inspired by other artists or not. The only downside is when artists don't acknowledge the fact they're heavily inspired by others... that's pure stupidity.

Besides I wonder why it's necessary to re-release the song 'the disconnect'; that one was already available on his previous - heavy boc influenced - full length album Past Is Prologue

Anyways good music = good music...

yeah the "sounds like BOC so it's shit" argument must be the bane of his existence. He's a talented graphic artists as well. subject matter isn't original but he's good at it, no doubt. Looking forward to this, the Merck 12" was a slight disappointment.

The whole coffee stain thing is nothing new, so don't criticize him for using something that was probably first created by accident over a hundred years ago.

yeah, that's definitely ripping off ehquestionmark's album art for lex

His stuff sounds nothing like BoC - if anything, I'd say he was closer to Maurmari than BoC, but regardless, good music is good music - it's not like BoC trademarked wobbly synths or anything, considering their inspiration was old NFBOC documentary soundtracks.

Also, look at the artwork again - don't you see the faces in the upper and lower right and left corners, respectively? I'd hardly call this a ripoff of another artist's work.

ah yeah i see them. now it looks like MHTRTC zoomed in a little bit with a coffee stain on top. i think i get it. whilst making music he keeps a copy of MHTRTC vinyl handy so he can give it a listen when he feels uninspired. then he only went and put his coffee cup on it oh no. then he scanned it and blurred out the MHTRTC cover a little and lol

He sure is talented but Tycho definitley is influenced by BoC and that's ok. There's no point in denying that... Check out Boards of Canada - Left Side Drive and Tycho - Dictaphone's Lament and listen to the similarity in both songs. Or skip to 6:30 in this mix.

HAHA. Fantastic! This topic actually made me dl "past is prologue" once again to see if I missed anything last time, and I didn't. Tycho is crap.
