awesome! me and my folks went to the races today (horse races) as a boxing day day out.... I bet on 4 races and won absolutely fuck all.

My best friend growing up just got back from 2 years in Leeds. He tried to explain Boxing Day to us Americans, and after a few failed attempts left it at "you get really drunk the day after Christmas".

I think we need exactly such a holiday over here indeed.

Growing up in the UK, no-one ever explains it or why its called boxing day. These days we can look it up but when I was 10 I couldn't. But the historical meaning is completely lost now anyway. In practical terms, in the UK its a bank holiday the day after christmas (i.e. nearly everyone has the day off work) and it acts as a kindof unstructured day of chilling/drinking/visiting/walking. As in, Christmas day has a lot of structure and expectations and lengthy preparations (spend it with family, open presents, eat huge meal of roast meat and roast veg, pull crackers and wear paper hats, eat christmas pudding, eat mince pies, drink lots, watch queens speech and/or raiders of the lost ark, play charades) but Boxing Day is more like 'do something christmassy but less structured'. Some people go for walks. Some people just carry on eating and drinking. You might go and visit people. Big shops tend to start sales so some people go shopping. I think some people watch football?

This year for me, the day after boxing day still had a boxing day vibe, hence bumping this thread.

Got it! Where I come from we just saying "Other day Christmas" or "Another day Christmas" Which is still a Christmas Day so bank is closed and nearly everyone has the day off as well. 
People mostly just relaxing or go for shopping cus all the price bumps. 

It is just that "Boxing Day" sounds so special lol 

Why did I until today think boxing day meant the day for opening boxes with Christmas gifts?
