buying and electribe esx-1 soon

I believe there is a converter program to get them set up properly.

At least, there is one for the ES1. The ESX might be different because it can actually display letters in its display. Those names are probably just fine.

Go download the official manual from korg.com and take a look yourself.

what will it accept?

bd 001.wav through bd 999.wav

For an existing sample, Press the "sample" button". Scroll to whatever sample you want to name. Hold down "shift" and press "write" . If you make a new sample, save it to whatever number is free, then do the same.

You name patterns the same way in pattern mode.

do upper case or lower case letters matter?

No. As LJG mentioned you can name them anything you want out of the available characters. When I first got mine, before I deleted a lot of stuff I used all lowercase just to differentiate my stuff from the factory stuff. I do the same with synths often, unless I initialize the entire memory.
