thinking of abandoning mac/osx for pc/win

Recommended Posts

i still love macs, still think they're slightly more stable than windows/pc's, still love the layout of the operating system, and audio units and everything. not as psyched as to how osx is slower on the same hardware as windows, nor in opengl sucking ass at games compared to direct x, nor the few and far between yet still unnessesarily annoying compatibility issues. bottom line is it's just a fucking computer, and i can just do everything with my pc and not use my macs at all.

as i currently have 2 macs and 2 pc's (which is kind of retarded since 2 is enough for my wife and i) i'm not exactly planning on selling or getting rid of my mac's just trying to ween myself off them and not buying any more in the future/just continuing to build and upgrade my pc's instead and eventually migrate to just doing everything on there.

to this aim there's only 2 pieces of software that are only available for mac that i give a shit about using. unfortunately it is my DAW software (digital performer) and my sample editor software (peak). i also use renoise, reaktor, kontakt, max/msp, etc. but those all work on windows too.

i love renoise but there seems to be some things it's not as adept at doing (like anything not step sequenced) and i also do guitar-based music where i'd like to just be able to plug into a DAW and record shit and overdub shit and edit the audio once recorded and such which was quite easy to do with digital performer (was kind of like pro tools) and for this i was thinking of migrating possibly to ableton live as that also runs cross platform and quite a few of you seem to swear by it, and it SEEMS like it would be able to handle all the shit i'm talking about, as well as make it easier to "perform" my electronic music live.

so yea, sell me on ableton.

I had DP and hated it, it was the first DAW ( a crack) I had used and for whatever reason I couldn't make head or tails of it. I bought Ableton and quickly learned it and have no qualms with it. So given your knowledge of DP it seems you'd be able (no pun) to do the same. I run Reaktor session, reason, a few plug ins as well as hardware through it to make "tracks"... on a mac.

i love dp. it was also the first DAW i ever got but it all made a lot of sense to me and is the only DAW software so far to make a lot of sense to me. but i'd really rather break my umbilical cord to it and just start using only cross platform software to prepare myself for my eventuality of not using macs anymore (as well as be compatible with friends for collaboration).

Ableton is nice in the sense that it has a new interesting work flow (session view) but if you want to you can just kick it DP style in the arranger. Its also nice that when you are done with a piece in either view you can easily construct it to be able to be played live. Also you can use the same project file on both PC and mac.
