FUCK REASON 4

So I just installed Reason 4, all excited to get play with all the new toys and i just found out that they removed one of my favorite features!!!

no longer can i midi map the step length on the ReDrum!

why oh why would they take out something so simple?! it was bad enough that you couldn't automate it, but now you can't even map it! every thin lse is still mappable, and new stuff too. why remove functionality? WHY?!?!?!

ok after fuckng around some more, i've discovered that i can recreate this with the combinator and thor

i wish i could map redrum step sequencer or at least toggle the step buttons with the keyboard...

but there is usually a slightly more complicated way of doing things in the end in Reason, and i dont mind that most of the time, its fun routing that stuff

Reason 4 is amazing. One could practically do everything Autechre does in something like Reason 4. I use them as the primary example b/c of their tendency to work modularly, controlling parameters with LFOs, etc.

The only thing that bothers me in Reason 4 is how it makes all these useless sublips when I'm trying to record something within a loop. I'm always left having to join them manually.

But otherwise, the clips system, and everything else in Reason 4 (that my noob self can think of) is solid.

so, i messed with it some more, and no i cannot see how to do what i want to do... anymore.

this sucks.

the only device that appears to allow midi mapping on a step length param is thor, and you can't exactly use that as a drum sequencer. it doesn't sound the same when i manipulate it.

by the same token, fuck cubase 4.

reason 4 is great, but i doubt they'll ever fix the shitty mixer and sound processing algorithms, which makes the program unusable as anything but a sketchpad.

yes, it is by my account an indubitably splendid pastime. the thing is, you can make great tracks, but when in other programs it's about just making the track, using your knowledge of compression, EQ and mixing, in reason it's more like spending alot of time.. making it not sound like reason. the mixer is shit when you got alot of sound runnin

Like most things, once you use for more than a couple of months and get stuck it to all the stuff on there you don't have to think about it sounding like reason anymore. There are always other options as well, rewiring to cubase is a good for making use of the extra fuctionality. People always like to winge. I like reason 4 it's great.

Unless you use the factory soundbank sounds to an excess, and don't make trance, you should be on a good start. Personally, if you listen my songs from '04 to now, you can't even tell it was composed entirely. I can't wait to use the re-wire capabilities., cuz I just got ableton...
