Neptune 2 analogue synth

I got one of these recently direct from makers Spectral Audio. Sounds nice. Having a bit of trouble with the MIDI side of things though (it has a built in MIDI to CV converter & ironically the MIDI side of things is giving me a headache!). I did post about it before but the thread seems to have dissapeared :cry: At the time I held my hands up & admitted it had no relevance to BoC what so ever ....... apart from the fact that was a nice BoC'ish shade of blue :angry: I didn't have the synth then but I've got it now. So in order to give the topic a bit more of a BoC angle I've recorded a short sample of the synth doing it's thing;

Filter ENV, filter, OSC2 tuning & Distortion effect tweaked in real time as I recorded.

yeah there's a section called "Expert Knob Twiddlers" for discussing music making, including your synthies and what nots.

no idea why you would have to post in BoC. Why don't you try coming to General Banter where they talk about thinks after 2006 etc.

i think even the mods have forgotten this place exists.

Yes. Surely they would have moved this to the EKT forum (the one I neglected to observe. DOH!)

What sold you on the Nep2..?

I've toyed with the idea of getting a real analogue monosynth for years now but I could never really justify the cost. The Neptune 2 is one of the most affordable analogue monosynths I've seen. That had a lot to do with it. As well as that it has a decent enough feature set for an analogue mono synth. It has a built in MIDI to CV converter as well, which means it can be intergrated into my (mainly) computer based set-up nicely. That's cool because I'm not a player so being able to trigger it from a sequencer is important for me. The Future Music review helped sell it to me as well. They really rated it.

I liked the colour.

I thought the sound sample sounded really nice. A bit too bright towards the end, but nice an deep sounding. With a bit more degradation and filth it would sound very boardsy alright. It's pretty close now alright though.

btw My moog voyager can't help but spit out boc lead after boc lead, it's actually quite hard to get away from it sounding like that the whole time, hehe! It's just so flutey and smooth. Plus I can't really play piano 'properly', what I play is self taught over the last 10 years... but the style I play seems to sound really good on it, bum notes and all hehe.

I'm quite happy with the sound on the Neptune 2 but it's no Moog. I'm not a player either so I'm usually just playing really simple stuff from the keyboard or using a sequencer to trigger it. Here's a vid I done to demonstrate some of the sounds on the Neptune 2. It's just a very simple arp recorded into the sequencer with me, trying to look like I know what I'm doing, tweaking the parameters.

Does the Voyager have a MIDI > CV converter so you can trigger it from other gear or a sequencer? I like the look of the Voyager Old School. They sell for about £1,500 I believe so quite a bit cheaper than the Voyager. I did consider a Little Phatty. I think the Moog sound is still there on the LP but it kind of defeats the point not having a control for all the paramters. That's part of the attraction with analogue synths. If making music was a more serious past time for me, other than just pissing about with synths & software, I'd definitely look at getting a Voyager ........ but it's not so I doubt I ever will :) I'll just keep on playing about with what I've got making sub-standard doodlings & other horrible noises ;)
