Using Ableton on 2 pcs at the same time

Recommended Posts

yes. just sync one up to the other, one as master, the other as slave. Set the slave to 'EXT' to take its midi timecode from the master. It;s a pain in the ass to get working bang on though as the midi jitter / latency issues cause problems with timing, the slave is often a few ms out which makes detailed programming sound like dung. Heard it works better if you use an external source like a drum machine or dedicated hardware timecode box (anything that outputs wordclock - likes of Motu Timepeice, etc) and hook up both computers as slaves... that way the timing is a bit more solid... Abe just isn't very good when it comes to timing, bit jittery. You can see this if you hook up a hardware unit that displays tempo and set it to slave off a computer running Live - our Machinedrum displays tempo to 2 decimal places and you can see it drift back and forward a little while playing..when it should be dead steady.

Still suprised it all works. A bit inconvenient having to edit shit on the laptop when it'd be nicer to work off one unit but am impressed it works. That said it does drop out every now and then which could be a problem so don't know how reliable it is yet. Using my old Korg 05R/W midi thru to essentially provide the timing and the midi in of my UC-33 midi controller. Not sure how it all works totally yet but ironically just had enough audio and midi cables to make it work.

was at a party last night discussing this actually, I'm going to try and get it done with a mate of mine. Am i right in saying that it won't work if you're using an Ethernet cable?

Not had much luck so far with my desk and laptop, but i've got plenty more to learn i'm sure

Yeah, it seems it won't work with Ethernet so yeah you'll probably have to use midi cables.
