roland sh-101, old rave synths, etc

Recommended Posts

Guest maantecaaa!!!

hey guys,

producing music is a minor hobby of mine so I don't plan on spending alot of money for a synth(under $300 possible?). I'd like something that can produce the old techno(circa 91), hip-house and jungle synth sounds. What would be your best recommendation? I'm open to soft synths.

I also use Ableton, if that helps in your recommendation.

THANKS!

The Roland Alpha Juno 1 or 2. It will cover all your needs. I bought mine mint for $125 USD.

Search for "Gimme a Fat Beat" by Digital Boy. I suspect that track is all Alpha Juno (except drums and samples of course)

MKS50 is the rack Alpha Juno if you have a controller keyboard already

and another vote! first thing i thought of when i read hte thread title. they sound good, they're used on a lot of tracks in the styles you mention and they're surprisingly cheap. if you want to go the softsynth route then maybe give z3ta+ or whatever it's called a go, it's pretty good at ravey jungle sounds but it can take a bit of work to get it sounding decent.

Alpha Juno love!

Here are some more reasons it is great.

The Hoover patch

The chorus parameter

Velocity sensitive from a sequencer

Chord memory/octave unison

The alpha dial allowing tweakable parameters on the front

The PG-300 if you want some sliders later on

The slooow LFO

It also is available as the HS-10 (the exact same synth, but gray), so look out for that one too!

i just got a DX-7 off ebay for $200, mainly just to get nice semi-weighted keys and use it as a midi controller. you can get some really great wobbly digital bass and glassy strings n bells tho. a bit annoying to tweak but you can make presets using something like dx manager.

One more thing: It's a very underrated acid box.
