Field Recording places

Recommended Posts

Any of you guys field recorded at any places and got some good results? Anyone think of a great place to go but never executed it? Discuss here.

I got a friend coming into town on Sunday and I want to think of someplace really creative to go

go when it rains - it makes it harder to record but its worth it

trains are good

or try a lake

best places are where there is movement what ever this movement is (wind, water, animals, people...)

also places that have strange acoustics by them self

listen out for unusual repetitive noises, try stealthing it and just hanging out around lots of people, its amazing what you can catch.

also, cool noises in industrial parks near power stations or anything with huge machinery

Get a binaural set and just walk. Listen to Janet Cardiff's Munich walks with nothing more than a pair of binaural mic's.

large public places without background music

im really surprised how manby awesome samples ive gotten from background music playing places. i know itsweird, why sample music playing off a loudspeaker when you could sample it other ways? well sometimes the ambience combined with it and the acousticness of it sounds bad ass when put in a song. if you chop it small enough it could just sound liek a dirty vinyl record music sample with some extra surprises.

recording people when they havent a clue... the headphone technique always works well. my mp3 player has a built in mic and records in 16bit wav and i got a lot of funny/cool/crunch samples with it. got one of my girlfriend talking about bagels and lox for about 15 minutes. i played it for her on the ride home. it was good fun.

i went on a binge one weekend recording wind chimes with my r-09... i get weak at the knees with wind chimes.

i do recall some minidisc recording while walking through an arcade that sounded great, the strange blend of all the themes, sound effects, and conversations. i guess i focus on public places without bg music because it's so hard to find around here

i collect doorbells! the off/on bell tone type are great, get the r09 right underneath the... thing that chimes and you get the mechanical buzzing along with the chime with the "on" position and release it to get a clean chime with the mechanism winding down

what do you guys do when some hick is like, IS THAT SOME TERRORIST SHIT WHATRE U DOIN

i worry about that sometimes when i've got all the wires hanging off me, i've just been told to leave by security (i record at night mostly) and they were real nice about it so no bad experience yet. the worst is when i put it somewhere remote and someone finds it and starts asking about it, right next to it, clipping everything

All brilliant advice, thank you!

My H2 Zoom + crap ear buds it comes with looks like a shitty ipod, I've never been asked what I'm doing but it mostly looks like i'm picking new songs to play.

Guest Iain C

I live very close to the Greenwich foot tunnel:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenwich_foot_tunnel

It's almost 400 feet long, cylindrical, tiled... in other words the acoustics are totally unique and any sound you make down there sounds like dripping liquid ambient gold. I've taken countless recordings there.

So, try a tunnel!
