total newbie.

Recommended Posts

Hello people, first post and all that. Refered here by the man Gump.

Eventually getting started on making my own music, been in a band for ages but I've been wanting to do my own thing as well for a while. After trying a few music making programmes getting nowhere I've discovered Fruityloops 6 producer edition, which is serving me well, however I'd love to know if it's possible to lay my guitar and bass onto tracks and would be obliged if someone could tell me if that's possible and how it's done. And whilst we're here how do I add differant vst? samples to the bank on fruityloops?

Cheers.

well, i use fruityloops 3 but unless they've changed it all you need to do is put your samples in the samples folder in whatever folder fruity is in.

i add bass and guitars that same way. i just make a recording of the bass riff and then sequence it in where i want it like any other sample.

to add a vst go to the channels menu and hit add one. then hit fruity wrapper and you should have a new sample in the sequencer that you can load a vst into.

Cheers mate.

Is a vst just another name for a sample?

What does clipboard files mean? is this differant again from vst and samples ?

And how do you actually record your guitars in the first place?

I tried to plug my guitar into mic port in back of the p.c then ran out of ideas.

a vst is a virtual synth something or other. you download them from various websites and put them in the plugins\ vst\ folder. i don't really use them that much.

oh yeah, vsts can be fx too which is pretty neat. i use a lot of those. just put them in the vst folder and then add them like you do the normal effects.

to record my guitar i basicly plug it into my mixer/ tape recorder and that goes into the mic jack on my computer. it works great for me but people here laugh at that for some reason so i guess there must be a better way (?).

vst... virtual synth technology.

vsti... virtual synth technology instrument.

'plug-ins'... or small dll files which sit in your vst folder, and load up as virtual synths or effects.

samples... a snippet of sound recorded from somewhere which you use in your music

clipboard files... files temporarily recorded to the 'clipboard'

record your guitar by plugging an amped.. preferably balanced signal into your soundcard... open a reecording program... hit record... play.

often best if you play to a 'click' track, or metronome, to make cutting and pasting easier when it comes to arranging the 'samples' you've recorded, because they are in time, and can ne easily superimposed over a predetermined time signature.

hope that helps.

yowza.

Nice 1 , cheers for the info. Time to demonstrate my newbieness, what's a soundcard, I've tried plugging my guitar via jack to minijack convertor straight into mic port. I take it that's not the done thing?

When you say recording programme, would FL actually record the guitar?

With FL producer edition, you can also record your guitar and bass tracks live. If you have a microphone input (and an soundcard with ASIO) you can select your mic from one of the FX on the mixer, set a file to record it as, and then record it live like an automation. It's kind of hard for me to explain, but it can be done if you don't want to go through the trouble of sampling it.

Well thanks, for that.

I just don't understand that kind of attitude , I mean the title of the post says it all, I'm a newbie at this, throw me a bone eh?

I'm snowed under right now trying to take a lot of info in, it all new to me and there's a lot to learn. It's good to hear from humans on a forum who can explan it to me etc and have been where I am.

Why even waste your time and effort with that ?

Downloaded soundforge. After much wailing and knashing of teeth I've got my guitar coming through now and will be able to record thru soundforge however there is a delay before you hear a note. Not delay like bum.. dee.. dee.. dee... dee. Delay like period of time elapsing between striking the string and the sound coming thru on the computer. I'm using a standard guitar lead.

Anybody know how tom resolve this.
