Tascam 644 midistudio

so I found one for gnars cheep. $150

Could be nice for lo-fi analog recording. Cool that it has midi support too. Seems like it would even make a good mixer w/o the record capability at all.

Opinions?

the 244 is great. my housemate has one of the later ones. it might actually be the 644... i'll have to ask when i see him. anyway, he loves it. tascam makes good stuff.

edit: except that shitty little blue one... it's a piece of garbage

I've done plenty of cassette stuff that people can't tell from "proper" studio recordings. "lo fi" is about the quality of the mikes and the space more than the recording medium. That notorious Pavement album "Slanted and Enchanted" was done on 16 track open reel - dude just didn't know what the fuck he was doing.

I guess by "lo fi" I really mean the things you can do via analog recording. I really like tape compression and hiss too.

The only issue would be buying it in the states and then trying to get it back to de EU. I bet that bitch weighs a ton.
